New Public Dove Field Added in Marion County

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - Dove hunters now have an additional field to hunt that was not included in the public fields listing in the 2016-2017 Kentucky Hunting Guide for Dove, Early Waterfowl, Woodcock, Snipe and Crow.

This field is a 40-acre corn silage field in Marion County.

"Silage fields by their very nature come in late, so this didn't make the deadline for publication of the dove hunting guide," said John Brunjes, migratory bird coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "This field became available for lease and looked good for dove hunting. We are always on the lookout for additional opportunity for our hunters."

Hunters may reach the Marion County field by taking U.S. 68/KY 55 west from Lebanon for 1.3 miles. Turn right onto KY 426 (Miller Pike) for 3.6 miles, then left on KY 84 for three-tenths of a mile. Take the first left onto KY 412 (Saint Joseph Road) and travel 1.5 miles to Sally Ray Pike. Turn right and travel six-tenths of a mile to the dove field parking area on the left.

The Whitehurst Diaries: The [Mis]Adventures of Willis the Cat

Click headline for complete story with photos

By Sharon Whitehurst

Jim has waged a long battle with the Pellyton possums who delight in raiding the melon patch. The malodorous, marauding melon-munchers have an uncanny way of knowing when a melon is on the cusp of perfect juicy ripeness.

Greedy creatures that they are, sampling one melon is seldom sufficient.

Jim live-trapped one large offender and trundled it off to a remote location where no one would think of gardening. There was a lull when a few melons ripened unmolested, than evidence of another poacher was detected, this one apparently wily enough to avoid the trap.
