Vonnie Kolbenschlag: More encouragement to recycle needed

Recycling has been my sermon for a long time. I see containers in many cities where I have visited. I see them at parks and airports. For some reason, people are more aware of the need to save resources than they are here. Where my sons live, home owners have a separate container for recyclables that goes out the same time as the garbage containers. Maybe we should be limited to ONE garbage container a week. Garbage amounts are limited if items are recycled.

I do not think recycling is encouraged here as it is some places. So, I'm asking,

Traffic accident reports should contain certain information

Writer wants law enforcement accident reports to always include whether drugs or alcohol involved, whether seat belts in use, and whether any electronic devices in use

For years, traffic accident reports contained two bits of information that I thought were rather helpful in tracking causes of traffic accidents . . . one was whether or not drugs or alcohol were suspected to be involved, and the other one (even before it became mandatory) was whether or not seat belts were in use.

Report from Adair County Sheriff's Office

On August 14, 2016, at approximately 8:20pmCT, the Adair County Sheriff Office responded to a two vehicle accident near Keltner Road on KY 55 north.

Brenda Stephens 66 of Columbia along with a passenger Homer Stephens was attempting a left turn on Keltner Road, when a second vehicle, operated by 23-year-old Macey Crawhorn of Columbia failed to notice Ms. Stephens attempting to turn and struck her in the rear of her vehicle.

Supt. Reed issues statement on supplies at ACHS

Supplies are free at Adair County High School for other than for dual credit (college) courses. Supplies are now on their way and should arrive very soon.

There was a slight delay in getting supplies for Adair County High School students in the building before school started.

The supplies are now on the way.

All students other will receive free supplies to include paper and pencils for high school courses other than for dual credit (college) courses, in which case students/parents will have the responsibility to purchase supplies.

Social workers and corrections officers get pay raises

From Commonwealth News Center

FRANKFORT, KY - (15 Aug 2016) - In an effort to retain and recruit social workers, and to fulfill Gov. Matt Bevin's pledge to increase the pay of our front line workers, social workers and family support employees across the Commonwealth of Kentucky will see an increase in their pay effective September 16, 2016.

In his State of the Commonwealth address, Gov. Bevin pledged "...$4.8 million dollars over the next biennium to increase entry level and new hire salaries for people who are taking care of our most vulnerable citizens." That includes $3.3 million dollars for Social Workers and Family Support Employees, and $384, 900 for CHFS Correctional Workers.

Lee County Tourism working on trail map

BEATTYVILLE, KY - (Mon 15 Aug 2016) - The Lee County Tourism Commission is currently putting together a strategic trail development and marketing plan to work towards mapping existing outdoor recreational activities in Lee County, such as hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, and rock climbing.

Dedra Brandenburg, Executive Director of Lee County Tourism and Economic Development, received a $7,000 grant through the Appalachian Regional Commission Flex-E-Grant program, which is administered by The Center for Rural Development. The grant is helping to fund the strategic plan.

Deadline for applications for the 2016 Adair County CAIP program is Friday - August 19, 2016 at the Adair County Extension Office located at 409 Fairground Street in Columbia. The County Agriculture Investment Program is a 50% cost-share program with a maximum funding of $1,500 per farm operation. CAIP is designed to provide farmers with incentives to allow them to improve and diversify their current production practices. Incoming students at LWC were told to mark their calendars for Saturday, May 9, 2020.

That is when members of the Lindsey Wilson College Class of 2020 are scheduled to graduate from the liberal arts college.

LWC President, William T. Luckey Jr., told the freshman class Saturday afternoon at an opening ceremony in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining Center to make a habit of making good decisions throughout their next four years at LWC, and throughout life.
