Gary Rose: Using recycling bins for garbage is disgusting

Gary Rose writes:
Using the recycling bins for garbage is disgusting. I have not seen any garbage in them, but don''t doubt it. What I have noticed is that at times all the compartments are fairly full but the can compartment will be empty. I don't think that I am the only one putting cans in the bins. This tells me that people are stealing the cans and the related revenue from the county. I am most likely wrong here, but once something goes into the recycling bins is it not now the property of the county? I believe that since the recycling bins are property of Adair County then so are the contents once it goes into the bins. Maybe one of the lawyers we have in the county can answer this. --Gary Rose

Recycling: Maybe we could learn something from Sweden

Ever rising cost of disposal in a landfill makes recycling, regardless of revenue gains from sales of recycled material, a fiscal positive

By George Kolbenschlag

Just perhaps we could learn a bit about recycling from Sweden.

I was talking with a very personable Swedish student at Lindsey Friday evening and learned that 99% of refuse in Sweden is recycled. Only 1% goes into landfills. In this country in 2012 we recycled about 34%.

The others shouldn't count against our lifetime. I don't remember who expressed that idea first, but I have made it my own.

Ralph Waggener: Was told people misusing recycling bins

Probable reason recycling bins withdrawn: Misuse of bins and plummeting prices for salvage material, as well illness in the Recycling Department some of problems
Click on headline for complete commentary

By Ralph Waggener
Commentary by Editor & Publisher, It's Just for a Smile News

In a talk with CJE Stephen on the phone the other day he told me that a lot of people are using the recycling bins for their garbage. The person in charge of them has been sick and had no one to do his work when he was off. We recycle here at Trifecta Print, and South Central Printing was one of the first to use the recycling program, Judge Stephens also told me that they have 99 places to pick up paper and card board all over the county; although the jail furnishes the helpers it is not making money because the recycle material has gone down to $60.00 per ton from about $90.00 per ton.

Eulogy by Senator Mitch McConnell for his friend Dr. Phil Aaron

By Mitch McConnell,
United States Senator and Senate Majority Leader

Dr. Phil Aaron was a friend of mine for almost 50 years. His was the face I could always count on seeing when I visited Adair County.

He was caring. He was brilliant. He lived a life in service of others. It's impossible to miss the impact he has made in our commonwealth, in Adair, and in the hearts of everyone gathered today.

I still remember when we first met, at UK. I was earning a law degree. Phil was earning a masters in American history. It was just one of many degrees he'd receive over the years. Phil collected college degrees the way some of us might collect stamps, or coins, or Pokemon.

He's an alumnus of Campbellsville University, Centre College, and Columbia's own Lindsey Wilson College. He received a masters in public health from Yale. He earned a law degree from U of L and that masters in history from UK.
