Mr. Fred Blair Smythe, 78, Green Co./Adair native (1937-2016)

He was a native of Columbia, Adair County, KY, the son of the late Fred Rich Smythe and Lois Blair Smythe. His wife, Alice Thompson Smythe, survives. He leaves 35 direct living descendants. He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church. He was formerly employed with Batesville Casket Company, and was an Electrician for Techno. Mr. Smythe was also a veteran having served in the United States Navy from 1956 until 1960.

COLUMBIA, KY - Thirty-two rising high school juniors from 24 Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky counties spent a week at Lindsey Wilson as Rogers Scholars. Sponsored by the Somerset-based Center for Rural Development, the weeklong program gives students a glimpse into college life and opens their eyes to several career possibilities. A second class of rising juniors will be on campus in mid-July.

FRANKFORT, KY (8 Jul 2016) - The State Emergency Operations Center and the Kentucky Joint Information Center remain activated at Level IV and continue to monitor the strong weather system that has impacted the Commonwealth over the last few days.

The system has dropped at least 15 inches of rain in some areas of western Kentucky, resulting in severe flooding causing roads and bridges to wash out.

Driver airlifted after single vehicle accident 8 Jul 2016

Driver reportedly fell asleep ath the wheel after working a late shift assisting in restoring power. 1997 Jeep leaves roadway, driver ejected and thorown approximately 70-80 feet before coming to rest in field. Victim treated on the at scene by Adair County EMS, airlifted to UL Hospital.

Each young child that visited the bus received a gift bag with a new book and suggested activities to promote school readiness skills. Parents had access to information about preschool, Headstart, First Steps, Family Resource, Agape House Pregnancy Resource Center, Adair Public Library, and Adanta Early Childhood programs

Marty Dale Mays, Sr., 51, Casey Co., KY (1964-2016)

He was a devoted husband, father, and of the Baptist faith. Marty also loved his animals, fishing, and driving his tractors. In years past, he enjoyed drag racing. He was a carpet installer for over 30 years. his wife, Jamie Romans Mays, survives. He leaves 19 direct living descendants.

Gov. Bevin proclaims July General Aviation Appreciation Month

FRANKFORT, KY (8 Jul 2016) - Gov. Matt Bevin recently declared the month of July as General Aviation Appreciation Month in Kentucky. Through an official proclamation, Gov. Bevin highlighted some of the achievements, successes and overall contributions made by the aviation industry.

"We are soaring to new heights in Kentucky," said Gov. Bevin. "General aviation and community airports play a critical role in the lives of our citizens, businesses and farms. In addition, business aviation is an invaluable tool for companies in Kentucky to support their operations, thus bringing new business, investment and jobs to Kentucky."

Talina Rose Matthews appointed as Executive Director of the PSC

"Ms. Mathews’ previous experience with the commission and her strong background in energy policy will make her a great asset to an agency that makes decisions that affect the lives of nearly every Kentuckian," Commission Chairman Schmitt said.

FRANKFORT, KY (8 Jul 2016) – The Kentucky Department of Revenue has set the 2016 State Real Property Tax Rate at 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value. Kentucky Revised Statute 132.020 requires the Department of Revenue to set the real property rate no later than July 1 of each year.

Yes, the tree spotlighted is a Maple, a Sugar maple to be correct. Sugar maple is a genetically variable tree which means it can exhibit many different qualities and behave differently from tree to tree on the very same site which leaves us (pun intended) guessing in many respects about the upside down leaves on this particular tree.
