2016-07-06 - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
July 2, 2016 morning sunshine put a spotlight on the Lincoln County Courthouse on a recent trip. As I studied the architecture, flags and landscape, I found myself wishing Columbia would be next in line to bury electric lines in our historic downtown. The subject has been brought up in the past at City Council meetings and always dismissed as "too expensive", however, many towns our size are finding the money for this improvement and I think we can, too. -- LW

Carol Perkins: It's only hair

"Cancer is a lonely disease even if a person is never alone. Sometimes strength comes from different places." Carol's lifelong friend shared a story about her own battle and how she found that strength. "My strength came from a little girl named Sarah on the back of a cart in a grocery store," she relates in this heartwarming story of two strangers who somehow recognized a common bond.
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Driving Tour of Ireland Part II

By Carol Perkins

"It's only hair." When a clump of it shows up in a hairbrush one morning, it's more than hair.

Judy Wallace Irvin (my lifelong friend) had not been feeling well for almost a year. After many tests, one revealed a tumor lodged in a duct in her pancreas, and two months ago she began chemo treatments to shrink it before surgery. Once a week, she goes to Lexington, sits in the chair where others have sat, and watches the drip flow into her body, praying that it is doing its job. "You will lose your hair," the oncologist told her.

"It's only hair," she consoled herself. We all said the same thing to her, "It's only hair. It will grow back."

Byron K. Watkins: Fond memories of the Garnett House

Byron M Watkins writes:
The Garnett House once was the home of my Great Great Grandfather. Samuel Gipson Suddarth. He lived in Evansville IN when the photo was made. This information is in one of the photo histories of Columbia recently published. It would be a wonderful historical site had it not been lost due to fire. I have wanted to walk around the area sometime and see if any signs of the past still show! Today some folks may not want some one wandering around like that. So, I do appreciate the photo and its vividness! Thanks B. Watkins - Byron M Watkins

Remembering one-of-a-kind Junior Walker (1929-2016)

He was the popular choice "Mr. Democrat" of Adair County, KY. He was straight-ticket man and outspoken in his support of the party. He was much more than that, of course. He had one of the most inventive minds of any Adair Countian ever. The story which follows, first published over 10 years ago on CM, gives some insight on the talents of this amazing man, reposted today, Wednesday, July 6, 2016, on the day of his funeral. For Him: Sunset seen through the branches of a peachtree

Sunset seen through the branches of a peach tree in our backyard, taken July 5, 2016.

I see the peace of God on display in His handiwork all around us, inviting us all to rest with Him - by taking a walk and having a talk with Him.

So much pulls at us during each day that it can be easy to forget that at the end of it all it's not about what we did but how we did what we did: with Jesus or without him.
