Burton named 2016 ABCA/Diamond Regional Coach of the Year By Charlie Balcom Lindsey Wilson baseball head coach Jonathan Burton has been named a 2016 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Diamond Regional Coach of the Year, ABCA officials announced last week. Burton is one of 10 regional coaches of the year around the NAIA to be honored. The ABCA also handed out regional coaching awards at the NCAA, junior college and high school levels throughout the United States. Burton led the Blue Raiders to their second-consecutive Avista-NAIA World Series appearance in 2016 where they collected the program's first-ever World Series win, concluding the season with a 44-25 record. Lindsey Wilson won five-straight elimination games to capture the NAIA Opening Round Lawrenceville Bracket and advance to the World Series. Following the World Series, Lindsey Wilson received a No. 6 national ranking in the NAIA national poll, the highest ranking in program history. The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 8,200 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, the association's annual awards program has grown to include nine divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Division I, II, III, Pacific Association Division and High School. The Regional and National Coaches of the Year will be honored at the ABCA/Diamond Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Jan. 6, 2017 in Anaheim, California, as part of the 73rd annual ABCA Convention.
