Year in Review: 2016 Lindsey Wilson Baseball

By Charlie Balcom

The 2016 Lindsey Wilson baseball season saw the Blue Raiders win five-straight elimination games in the NAIA Opening Round, make their second-straight NAIA World Series appearance, win their first-ever World Series game and finish as the No. 6-ranked team in the nation, the highest ranking in program history.

Lindsey Wilson completed the 2016 campaign with a 44-25 record, the fourth time in the last five seasons the Blue Raiders have eclipsed the 40-win mark. A 13-8 Mid-South Conference record saw them share the MSC regular season crown with Campbellsville (Ky.), just the program's second conference regular season title.

After falling in the MSC Tournament, Lindsey Wilson was sent to the NAIA Opening Round Lawrenceville Bracket. The Blue Raiders dropped the opening game of the tournament to IU-Southeast (Ind.) to slip into the consolation bracket. From there, Lindsey Wilson proceeded to win five-straight elimination games, single-handedly eliminating the other four teams in the Opening Round, including a pair of wins over No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett on their own field.

In the championship "if necessary" game against the Grizzlies, the Blue Raiders trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, but scored on an RBI single to tie things and later walked off on a wild pitch to hand the Grizzlies just their sixth loss all season, and punch their second-straight ticket to the NAIA World Series.

Lindsey Wilson then made program history as the Blue Raiders took down The Master's (Calif.) to earn their first World Series win. The Blue Raiders nearly took down top-seeded Faulkner (Ala.), but the Eagles escaped with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 5-4 and send Lindsey Wilson down in to the consolation bracket. Lindsey Wilson fought off elimination once with a wild 15-12 win over Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.), but fell in their next contest to Bellevue (Neb.) to end their season as one of the final six teams in action.

For their efforts at the World Series, Aaron Ashton and Edgar Lebron were named to the 2016 Avista-NAIA All-World Series Team, a first for the Blue Raider baseball program.

Ashton, Lebron and Scott Sebald were all named First Team All-MSC selections. Ashton hit .333 with 76 hits, 15 doubles, seven home runs, 64 RBIs and 112 total bases. Lebron hit .335 with 64 runs scored, 78 hits, 12 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 32 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. Sebald posted an 11-3 record with a 2.74 ERA, six complete games, one save, the second-most innings pitched in the NAIA (121.2) and 131 strikeouts.

Throughout the season, Jan Carlos Ortiz, Fabian Chirino and Victor Nazario earned MSC Player of the Week honors, while Sebald was named the MSC Pitcher of the Week twice.

The No. 6 NAIA Postseason Poll ranking is the highest ranking in program history.

In the classroom, Victor Garcia and Ryan Harper were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes and were joined as Academic All-MSC honorees Jayden Jackson, Caleb Ratzman, Andy Weddle, and Ty Bennett.
