Project Graduation 2016: A safe, fun place to celebrate

The 2016 ACHS Project Graduation festivities will be on May 27, 2016 at the Adair County High School gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY.The doors will open approximately 30 minutes after graduation is over and will close at 10:30pmCT.

For the safety of the students, no one will be allowed to enter once the doors are closed. All Juniors and Seniors who plan on attending must be at the gym no later than 10:30pm, and will be expected to stay until Project graduation ends at 2amCT.

Congratulations go out to Lindsey Brooke Roberts, a 2016 graduate of Madison Central High School in Richmond KY. Lindsey graduated with high distinction with a 4.0 from MCHS where she was a member of the Madison Central Marching Band through all four years of high school. She played the flute and was the Flute Section Leader when the band won the 5A State Championship for the last two years. She will be continuing her education at Eastern Kentucky University this fall. Lindsey is the daughter of Susan (Long) and Joe Lillis and Steve Roberts of Richmond. She is the granddaughter of the late Patricia Hare and of Joe Hare and Jimmy Long.

Freddie Burton, 79, Adair County, KY (1936-2016)

He made friends everywhere he went. He was a very well-known and respected trainer in the horse racing industry across the country. He was a member of a large, respected Northeast Adair County Kentucky family. He was the son of the late Rufus & Anna mary Foster Burton. He was the patriarch of a very large family. He leaves 45 direct living descendants and took great pride that his one one of the few families with five generations at one time. He loved his families - His blood family, the Burtons and related, and his horse family. At almost any track, he'd meet horsemen he knew by name, and they knew him and loved him. His final resting place will be in Bearwallow Cemetery.

Blue Raider trio earns NAIA All-American honors

Denis Porcic, Raul Mendez and Alonso Tellez have earned NAIA Men's Tennis All-American honors, NAIA officials announced on Tuesday.

Porcic earned first-team honors while Mendez and Tellez were named to the second team.

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin and Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles today proclaimed May as Beef Month in Kentucky, citing beef's nutritional benefits and its impact on Kentucky's economy. They were joined by Beef Council chairman Steve Dunning, Beef Council president David Lemaster, Kentucky Cattleman's Association executive vice president Dave Maples, Kentucky Beef Council director of Consumer Affairs Kiah Twisselman, and the Governor's Office of Agriculture Policy executive director Warren Beeler.

LWC Baseball fulfills World Series expectations

Lindsey Wilson is the No. 8-seed in the 10-team Avista-NAIA World Series. The Blue Raiders face The Master's (Calif.) at 2pmCT on Friday, May 27, at Harris Field, 500 8th Ave, Lewiston, ID.

Expectations were high for Lindsey Wilson baseball entering the 2016 season.

The Blue Raiders started the season ranked seventh in the NAIA preseason baseball poll after reaching the program's first Avista-NAIA World Series in 2015.

The Adair County Fiscal Court held a brief Special Called meeting this morning, and approved a payment for a new Mack Truck, a budget transfer to pay a bill to the Forest Fire Protection Fund, to open a bank account for the Alcoholic Beverage Commission, to advertise for bid for rock and blacktop, chip and seal, and seal oil and concrete for the road department, and to consider CJE Mike Stephens' choice for a vacancy on the Columbia/Adair Utilities Commission.

Judge Stephens nominated Jr., a resident Adair County's Fifth Magisterial District. Sixth District Magistrate Greg Caldwell moved for approval of Mr. Brown, and Magistrate Terry Hadley (7) seconded the motion. On a show of hands vote, Caldwell and Hadley were joined by Harold Burton (1), and CJE Mike Stephens. Voting no were Billy Dean Coffey (5), Daryl Flatt (2), and Sammy Coffey (3). Magistrate Perry Reeder (4) was absent. Mr. Brown was approved 4-3.

The Adair County High School Class of 2016 will hold its commencement exercises on Friday, May 27, 2016, at 7pmCT at the John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Each senior who is participating in the graduation ceremony has been given two tickets for early entry. Ticket holders may enter the gym at 5:30pmCT. The general public may enter at 6pmCT.

The class of 2016 is made up of 199 students. One hundred six students have achieved a Latin honor academic recognition. Eighteen students have earned a Suma Cum Laude designation (a weighted GPA of 4.0 or greater), 39 students have earned a Magna Cum Laude designation (a weighted GPA of 3.5 to 3.99), and 49 students have earned a Cum Laude designation (a weighted GPA of 3.0 to 3.49).

At least two major votes were taken last night as the Adair County Board of Education focused on the proposed new Learning Center/Central Office Building, which is now much closer to reality.

Fittingly, time out was taken to recognize the man who has given advice and guidance to landmark goals, Darryl McGaha, who was presented the Meritorious Service award.
