At least two major votes were taken last night as the Adair County Board of Education focused on the proposed new Learning Center/Central Office Building, which is now much closer to reality.

Fittingly, time out was taken to recognize the man who has given advice and guidance to landmark goals, Darryl McGaha, who was presented the Meritorious Service award.

Superintendent Alan W. Reed, making the presentation, gave these remarks:

"The recipient of this year's Meritorious Service Award is an individual that worked alongside our leadership team to radically change the direction of our school district to include career readiness as an equally important part of the curriculum as college readiness.

"He has helped find funds for Work Keys testing for all preparatory students at ACHS. He has helped find funds for instruction on critical Soft Skills training for ACHS students.

"He has helped fund the interest inventory at our middle school to help get these students ready for a career pathway once they are enrolled at ACHS.

"Because of his efforts we were able to pull together funding to build an innovative partnership with the Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center and construct the satellite campus for Welding and Metal Fabrication and our Health Sciences Program that will turn out over 200 certified welders and Nursing Assistants by the time they come through the program.

"Thanks to his efforts and love for our school district and our county, we have been able to team up with Workforce Development projects including the recent partnership with KCTCS and Somerset Community College to train adults on our campus at night.

"These adults will find jobs close to home and help themselves and our economy. He is working closely with the board of education and the District Facilities Planning Committee and with entities in Frankfort to help us collectively pull off the new Adair County Community Learning and Technical Center.

"This will drastically expand our Career Pathways and provide countless high tech career opportunities for both students and adults.

"The 2016 Meritorious Service Award goes to Darryl McGaha."

The award had come as a complete surprise for Mr. McGaha, who had thought his invitation to the meeting was solely for the purpose of helping with the presentation of the request to the Board to approve the Learning Center.

After hearing a presentation on the proposal, the board voted 5-0, on a motion by Mike Harris (Div 5), with a second by Lisa Burton (Div 4). Members Terry Harvey (Div 1), Quin Lasley (Div 2) and Chairman Floyd Burton (Div 4), joined in affirming on a voice vote.

On a related subject, the board voted to hire a new district architect, alt-32, a firm with whom Tim Lucas, the district's advisor on the Learning Center/Central Office is affiliated. The action, taken on a motion by Mike Harris, with a second by Quin Lasley, received a unanimous voice vote.
