Ben Arnold: BJF has great idea for covered walkways

Great for economic development

Ben arnold writes:
Billy Joe has a great idea with covered walkways. Access and comfort would encourage people back into the town center. This is the center of our Community and it is a beautiful town center. Billy Joe's idea is financially possible and would also improve economic development. The first impression of a town is decisive when anyone thinks of starting a business. I think accent lighting of the buildings on the Square would also add to the town center. Let's all think more about this and look for methods. Thanks for the idea Billy Joe. - Ben arnold

Ralph Waggener: Stephen Collins is right, too

Ralph Waggener writes to Stephen Collins
You are right Stephens Collins we do need industry here in Columbia/Adair Co. as well as other developments. Improving our looks of our city are just more ways to help us get industry. We have a new Economic Development Board that is starting - at least it looks like they are - to do the right thing to land industry here. We can work at getting industries and at the same time work to make Columbia even a better place to live and work. It's not like having a quarter and you can buy one or the other; we have to have a lot of people interested in Columbia and its betterment! We need help in a lot of places, as well as learn how to spend the tax money so we get the best for the dollars spent. Thank you for pointing out how important industry is for Columbia, - Ralph Roy Waggener

PS - More people should speak there piece, it will only help us!

Stephen D. Collins: Jobs need to be the top priority

Comments re article 76531 BJ Fudge covered walkway idea He's on to something

Stephen D Collins writes:
I am all for making Columbia beautiful. However I wonder when is this small town going to receive more jobs. Working local instead of having to commute to work has many more benefits. For the ones looking at the dollars signs its more money in the local economy. For the homemakers Its more quality time at home with the family. Having a Hour and a half more time at home, may equate to less stress on marriages. I am Not saying B.J. doesn't have a good idea. I just feel more permanent employment word be better for the economy than a few temporary projects. - Stephen D Collins
Stephen Collins: Thanks. But making Columbia more livable is economic development at its most elemental level. To take that idea to absurd levels think of yourself as the CEO of a company with high paying jobs and you want to move it to a new location, where you, or your top managers will live. Do you want it in an East Chicago or a Danville or Glasgow, KY. Making Columbia more livable is a win for local residents and a win for economic development. Many believe that if all the money spent by economic development entities where spent on making Columbia more livable manufacturers and desirable employers would beat down the doors to come here. - EW

Comments about: Kentucky Color: Covered walkways a good idea for Columbia

By Ralph Roy Waggener

Ed, B J Fudge is on to something that would make marked difference in Columbia and LWC by building good looking covered walkways around the Public Square and up LWC Hill. The cost - if the government does not get involved might be doable.

Letter to parents and students

From Alan W. Reed, Adair County School Superintendent

The excitement is building for the start of another great school year! I am both pleased and excited to announce several improvements for the coming year that will help both our parents and students and provide for savings as well.

First, we will continue to provide the free lunch and breakfast program for all students in our school system, regardless of family income. I want to thank the many parents who sent e-mails and other feedback stating how much this had helped out in their own family situations.

Second, thanks to a combined effort on the part of our school principals, athletic directors and board of education, Adair County students will no longer be charged admission to either Adair County High School or Adair County Middle School sporting events.

Third, all of us are most excited about our new partnership with Cumberland Family Medical. Our new Health Kids Clinics, located in each school, are now in place. Besides the school nurses in each building, we are pleased to announce that addition of a nurse practitioner (Tiffany McMinnoway) and her nurse (Andrea Cowan), also through CFM.

With our new partnership with Cumberland Family Medical, Adair students who become ill at school will be able to see a nurse practioner and often have a prescription waiting by the time parents pick them up.

Finally, I am so proud of our entire team of maintenance and custodial experts, teachers, administrators, and central office employees. I hope all of you appreciate the teamwork approach to serving parents, students and community!

Sincerely, Alan W. Reed, Superintendent
