Lorne Holler: Gas prices result of lack of competition

A note: Lorne Hollar cites Joe Hare fuel find at $1.749, but Joe Hare has been edged by a Hare. Donald Hare found fuel at $1.639 in Lebanon, TN.

Lorne Holler writes:
I had to go back to my business classes. The law of supply and demand for goods and services without competition means when a supplier has no competition they can and most of the time will charge what they want. If there is competition, there are the checks and balances of retail and wholesale in an areas. This keeps everything within a reasonable price. - Lorne Holler

Mike Watson sends album of Cane Valley ads 22 April 1908

Click on headline for introduction and Mike Watson ad photo's
Photos now moved to Mike Watson: Early history, Cane Valley, KY

Adair County Historian Mike sent us four newspaper clippings from the 22 April 1908 Adair County News. The ads tell so much about how self contained many small Adair County villages were back then. Back when trips to the county seat were made just for special occasions. When buying groceries was a many-times-daily opportunity. When businesses might have specialty, but most offered general merchandise with put that down credit, no 'deli' but a more than sufficient sandwich, reg'lar or on sandwich crackers, could be had; when going to the post office was a walk, not a trip; when villages had lots of congregations and each had its own school and its own bank.

Cane Valley was like that, and because of it's central location between Columbia and Campbellsville, it's one of the few old towns which is poised to rise again. Back then, it was all those businesses and a village's own school which made the difference. In the new world a century later, rising towns are marked by their commutability, by having their own fire departments, and today, they often have their own Dollar General Store and their own destination eatery. The advertising memorabilia, however, gives even more of a feel for judging the importance of the outlying towns. Cane Valley is one which has had ups and downs but mostly ups, and today, and up again, with a winning vector ahead. - CM

George Rice: The Lord's Calf and the Devil

The following story tells of a mighty test of wills between the Lord and the Devil, with both sides getting the edge several times. You know the outcome? In a story better than Erskine Caldwell wrote about a similar conflict in 'God's Little Acre,' Adair County's great storyteller weaves a tale of suspense on the farm. Read it all, alone or to a group for the outcome. It's far better than cable. - CM
A true story of the Lord's Calf and the Devil, written 2015-01-24 - GEORGE RICE

George Rice

It was in the spring of 2014 when Beth and I (Beth is my dog), were circling the farm in our old farm truck checking for a new calf or dead cows or maybe a tree on a fence when we noticed number 50 cow had a new calf.

When a cow has a new calf I attempt to catch the calf and ear tag the calf to match the number of it's Mother. This calf was several hours old and it would not stop long enough for me to catch it and tag it.

So we had to let it go for then. However, the next day as we were circling the farm we found the little one curled up in the grass sound asleep. It isn't unusual for a cow to leave her little one asleep while going off to graze grass or in this case to stand in the shaded trees on the far edge of the field.

Hailey's Birthday Snowman project 24 Jan 2013

Click on headline for item with photos

By Granddad

It couldn't have been a better birthday party. To order, Hailey got a deep snow, and as wished, a snowman for her birthday. Shelby County got a heavy snow fall. Her folks in Columbia weren't able to make it for the event, but her Dad, Pen, documented it in depth, and shares three photos from the event. Flu has been a big factor in Shelby County, and one of the grandkids classes was down by 50% one day last week.

Word from Shelby County was that word from Anderson County was that flu closed schools there last week, but we haven't been able to run that down.

Hailey's big 3rd Birthday got bigger because of Shelby County flu and the Shelby County Blizzard - it has been continued for another Saturday, which her grands and great grand in Adair County can't wait to attend. - Granddad, Ed Waggener
