Goodnight winter sun

2015-01-18 - from Maple Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Mom said that 80 years ago before television, before internet, sunsets invited folks outside to view the changing of day to evening. It was a time of socializing and she remembers many stunning sunsets shared with her family. We found this sunset to be one of those that invited us to stop and be awed. This view looking west over downtown Columbia and the historic courthouse clock tower was discovered in front of the former residence of Hunter and Joyce Durham. - LW

Historical Word of the Day: Berties

By: Jim

The things stored in the dark recesses of the entity formerly known as my mind never cease to amaze, amuse, and occasionally terrify me. A few nights ago, the word "Bertie" bubbled up from the tar-pit depths and like a tired swimmer, did the dead man's float on the thin film of my memory, going willy-nilly this way and that in the weak tide of brain waves.

"Bertie," in the connotation in which I remember it, made a spontaneous appearance in 1960 or '61, early in the administration of Governor Bert T. Combs. It was the humorous if somewhat less than complimentary reference to Kentucky's first sales tax -- a whopping three percent -- he pushed through the legislature. "Don't forget the Berties!" quickly became a common reminder to ante up the additional pennies when making for a purchase.

I hardly can wait for tomorrow's "word of the day."

Powell Co. Woman Arraigned on Exploitation Charge

By: Daniel Kemp, Deputy Communications Director

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Attorney General Jack Conway and his Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control Unit today announced the arraignment of a Powell County woman on one count of knowing exploitation of an adult over $300. Bobbie Creech, 30, was indicted by a Clark County grand jury on Dec. 11, 2014, and arrested on Jan. 9, 2015. She was arraigned this morning in Clark Circuit Court.

Creech is alleged to have exploited an adult under her guardianship by cashing the individual's Social Security income checks, which were to be used for paying medical and living expenses at a Medicaid-funded facility, and keeping the money for her own personal use.

Letter: A Big Thank You to Peg

Sandi Wills writes:
What a great, sad, story. We all have those special dogs that we have to help face the Rainbow Bridge and we all face that pain with the knowledge that we have to help them on to another, pain free place no matter how it hurts us.

Peg is one of the most kind, gentle animal lovers I know. We can all learn so much from her about helping and giving to our animal friends.

A big "Thank You" to you, Peg, for caring so much! --Sandi Wills

Carol Perkins: I'm no Snowbird - Part II, conclusion

The idea of going to a warm location during the winter once we retire for good might work if we go to a village where people at least play bingo. I have to have people around me; uplifting people with ideas and opinions and plans. I think I will be contented to stay right here where I never long for something to do and can stay warm by the fire and know Spring is coming. A Snowbird I am not.

After changing rooms and settling in on the fifth floor of our condo in the Sandestin Beach Resort , we were exhausted. "Is there an ocean out there?" I asked as I flopped on top of the bed.

"We'll check it out in the morning," Guy said as he kicked one shoe off and then the other. If we still didn't have a view, then we no longer cared.

In May of 2010 I received a call from someone at the Jax's station in Russell Springs. They said there was an old chocolate Lab wandering in the parking lot. Customers were feeding him but people were worried he would be hit by a car. Could I pick him up? When I got there several people at the convenience store told me they remembered a young chocolate Lab that used to visit the store years ago. They said he was very healthy but they hadn't seen him in a long time. Could this be the same dog? Who knows? Maybe he was the same dog and old age had caught up with him. Whatever, he needed some TLC now.
