Keaton Thomas leads LWC Wrestling at Cumberland Open


Thomas went 4-0 en route to winning the 133-pound weight bracket

LEBANON, Tenn. - The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team competed at the Cumberland Open on Saturday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

Keaton Thomas led the way for the Blue Raiders, capturing the title at the 133-pound weight bracket. He opened the day with an 8-1 win over Cody Hill of Tennessee. He then took down Byron Smith of Memphis (Tenn.) with a 1-0 decision to advance to the semifinals. Thomas defeated Radley Gillis of Tennessee with a 6-5 decision to punch his ticket to the 133 finals.

In the finals, Thomas defeated Jared Browning of Tennessee by a 6-2 margin to capture the 133 tournament title.


Felix Casa del Valle also competed at 133 pounds and opened the tournament with a pin over Peter Acuna of Central Baptist (Ark.) in four minutes and 12 seconds. He then fell to Jacob Grigg of Appalachian State (N.C.) by a 14-6 major decision before a 17-4 major decision loss to Davion Caston of Campbellsville (Ky.) put an end to his day.

In the 141 pound weight class, Paul Longshore opened his day with three-straight wins. He defeated Jacob May of Brewton-Parker (Ga.) with a 12-1 major decision in his first match. Longshore then took down Dante Padilla of Williams Baptist (Ark.) with a 3-1 decision and followed with a 4-2 decision win over Bobby Ehman of Cumberlands (Ky.).

Longshore fell in the semifinals after dropping a close 6-5 decision to Jacob Murphy of Tennessee-Chattanooga and then took a medical forfeit in his next match to end his day.

Logan Hatfield, also competing at 141 pounds, won his first three-matches with decision victories. He rolled off 10-5, 4-2 and 6-2 decisions to advance to the semifinals. Hatfield suffered a setback when he fell to Hunter Manley of Tennessee-Chattanooga by a 6-2 decision, and then fell to Will Hale of Emmanuel (Ga.) via a pin.

A trio of Blue Raiders competed at the 149 pound weight class; Avery Martin, Tevin Smith and Isaiah Frank.

Martin fell to defending NAIA National Champion Jake Williams of Cumberland, but bounced back with a 17-3 major decision win over Wes Smith of Huntingdon (Ala.). He then ran into fellow Blue Raider Smith in an elimination match. Martin emerged victorious with an 18-2 technical fall.

Smith won his opening match by pinning Antonio Greene of Arkansas Baptist in four minutes and 30 seconds before a loss to Jacob Freeman of Middle Tennessee State sent him into the match against Martin.

Frank suffered a 10-4 loss to Adrian Gomerz of Brewton-Parker in his opening match, but proceeded to fight off elimination three times in the consolation bracket.

He took down Alex Lewis of Appalachian State with a 7-4 decision, followed by a 7-5 decision win over Brandon Abejon of Huntingdon and a 12-3 major decision over Jason Cain of Lyon (Ark.).

Frank then found himself pitted against Gomerz and Gomerz got the best of Frank once again, winning with a 6-0 decision.

Rhodes Bell began his day at 165 pounds with a 5-3 decision over Everett Colbert of Middle Tennessee. But then he suffered back-to-back losses to put an end to his day. His first loss came via a tight 3-2 decision loss to Scott Deluse of Cumberlands, followed by another close 6-3 decision loss to Peter Donchev.

Alan Drake also competed at 165 pounds but fell in his first two matches by a 2-0 decision and a 6-4 overtime loss.

Elliott Porter fell in his opening match at 197 pounds before bouncing back with a pin in one minute and 30 seconds over Jackie Miller. Porter would fall in his next match after suffering a pin by Devin Morrow of Cumberlands.

Wesley Morris, also competing at 197 pounds, fell via a 4-1 decision and an 8-1 decision in first two matches.
