Governor declares State of Emergency ahead of severe weather

From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On March 31, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency ahead of severe weather that is expected to begin this evening in Western Kentucky, especially the Jackson Purchase area, and has a high probability of producing long-track, violent tornadoes.

The Governor noted this is the same area devastated by the December 2021 tornadoes, and according to the National Weather Service, there is a high probability of severe tornadoes moving through this area once again up to I-65. The rest of Kentucky, with the exception of the East, should expect violent thunderstorms followed by significant winds with wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour.

"If you are in Western Kentucky, you need to be in a safe shelter by 5 p.m. Central Time," said Gov. Beshear. "This is the worst forecast I've seen as Governor. I am declaring a state of emergency so that we can be prepared. We are taking this very seriously and we need you to take this seriously, too. Please be prepared. Let's do everything possible to keep everyone safe."

Letter: Storms

Ann Pearson writes:
Lately we have had so much bad weather with lots of damage to property. We live out in the Gradyville area and we have no warning siren to let us know to take cover. The last storm dropped 2 trees in my yard, one right by my home. Has anyone ever considered putting a warning siren somewhere in the area of the old Gradyville store for those of us out here?

Kentucky Color: Poison in the Yard

By Billy Joe Fudge

Garden Star-of-Bethelem is another pretty poison growing in many yards and yes it can make you or your animals sick! The bulb-like corms can even cause breathing difficulties. It is invasive and a prolific spreader. Since it propagates asexually via corms it is very hard to kill and contain. So digging up the bulb-like corms and disposing of them by some method that keeps them from coming into contact with the soil is a must.

Click title for step-by-step instructions for responsible removal of Garden Star-of-Bethelem.

Opinion: Adair County Occupational Tax

By Brian Morrison
An Adair Co. native living in Fort Worth, Texas

I must first preface this by saying that I am an outsider to Adair County, even though having grown up in the county, that is just the way that it is when you leave. My family roots in Adair County stretch back many generations, from the time that my forefathers immigrated from what is now Virginia, prior to Kentucky becoming a state.

I was born and raised in the Mount Carmel area, and spent my youth growing up as a young man should, hunting, fishing and doing what boys do. But there came a point in my early twenties when I realized that if I chose to remain and live in Adair County, that my choices and ambition would be limited by the persistent/perpetual thoughts of those in the community that "we like things the way that they are and we do not want change in any form or fashion". I think that a portion of sentiment in the statement that was left out is that "change is threatening".

That train of thought is the exact reason that Columbia and Adair County continue to barely cling to a subsistence life, for many residents. Change is hard and the management of change is even more daunting, that being said change is not always a bad thing.

High winds, possible storms Friday night

Mike Keltner, Director of Adair Co. Emergency Management, sends word that the National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a Wind Advisory for Friday evening beginning at 7pmCT on Friday and continuing through 4pmCT on Saturday, for portions of Central Kentucky that include Adair and all surrounding counties.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Friday night as a cold front moves through the region. The highest risk of severe weather will be in areas mainly west of I-65 where damaging winds and an isolated tornado or two will be possible. If the sun comes out this afternoon, severe storms are more likely, whereas more cloud cover means the threat is diminished somewhat.

Expect a period of prefrontal gradient wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph tonight.

After the cold front passes through, gusty gradient winds are expected for Saturday. Wind gusts of 40-50 mph will be possible and a few gusts of 50 mph or greater will be possible, especially across the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky.

Letter: Fiscal Court response to the occupational tax

Della Hare writes:
I totally agree with Mary Bardin on her letter. No one really wants new taxes but in order to have this county in better shape this is sorely needed! What Mary wrote about the Sheriff's department and the jail is so true. We have a good sheriff and a good jailer but how can they do their jobs without the money to work with? I used to go to the jail to lead a Bible study before Covid came along and believe me those employees deserve much more than they earn.

There is so much this county needs and cannot be provided with. It's so difficult to believe Adair County is 1 of 10 counties out of 120 counties in the state of Kentucky to not have this tax! Thank you Terry Hadley for voting yes! What is the problem with the rest of the Fiscal Court for voting this down?

Tennis: Blue Raiders topple Saints of Thomas More

At the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex, the Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team ran its season-long win-streak up to six matches with a 6-1 handling of Thomas More University (KY) on Thursday, while the women's tennis team soundly upended the Thomas More women's tennis team 7-0. The victory pushes the women's win-streak to seven matches, and caps off a perfect slate for the month of March.

The Blue Raiders are back on the courts on Saturday afternoon to host Shawnee State University at 1pmCT. The match will also serve as the team's "Senior Day" celebration. The men will be recognizing their two senior members of the team, Santiago Diaz and Almeida, and the women's team will recognize its lone senior, Rachdanone, prior to the match.
