Kentucky Color: Poison in the Yard

By Billy Joe Fudge

Garden Star-of-Bethelem is another pretty poison growing in many yards and yes it can make you or your animals sick! The bulb-like corms can even cause breathing difficulties. It is invasive and a prolific spreader. Since it propagates asexually via corms it is very hard to kill and contain. So digging up the bulb-like corms and disposing of them by some method that keeps them from coming into contact with the soil is a must.

Click title for step-by-step instructions for responsible removal of Garden Star-of-Bethelem.

  1. Identify Garden star-of-Bethlehem growing in my yard

  2. I use a pulaski which is a single-bit axe mattock to loosen the roots.

  3. I remove as much of the soil as possible so as not to throw it away. No it is not wild onion or garlic.

  4. Lastly, I choose to dispose of them in garbage bags to make sure they don't become a problem for someone else.
