Keep spirits bright even in pandemic holiday season

From the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service

A tradition is something you know you can count on. The predictability of a tradition often provides comfort in what can be an inexplicable world. Sometimes, however, traditions have to change or dissolve.

In some instances, traditions change because of life's natural progression: marriage, a growing family, loss of a loved one, or a move for example.

This year, the coronavirus pandemic is forcing change for many, including interfering with holiday traditions.

Tigers win the Battle of Highway 55

By Christopher Coombs

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team dropped the first installment of the Battle of Highway 55 this season against Campbellsville by a final score of 90-76 at Biggers Sports Center. The loss moves the Blue Raiders to 3-5 on the season and 1-4 in the Mid-South Conference.

Lindsey Wilson struggled from the field in the first half connecting on just 33 percent of their shots including a 1-of-13 mark from beyond the arc. The first half effort plagued the Blue Raiders as they trailed by 10 at the break and never threatened in the second half to ultimately fall by 14 points.

Gov. Beshear provides update on COVID-19

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - In the first COVID-19 update of the new year, Gov. Andy Beshear said the state's elevated positivity rate is likely due to some labs and public testing sites being closed over the holiday, which increases the percentage of tests conducted in medical settings where patients are experiencing symptoms and suspect they have the virus.

"Every day we are reminded how fragile the progress we have made in defeating this virus really is," Gov. Beshear said. "We will wait and watch closely over the coming days and weeks to gauge the impact the holidays may have had on our recent success in slowing new case growth. With more vaccines arriving in 2021, we have a new sense of hope but right now we must all continue to do our part to stop this virus, including wearing a mask and avoiding large in-person gatherings."

Letter: Rose Island photo

Phil Hanna writes:
Years ago, when I was still iiving in Louisville, I had been told by someone who had been there, that there was a stone fortress at Rose Island. Someone had given me a book that talked about it but that book was damaged irretrievability after a flood doused my appartment while at UK that year.

Christmas gift traces military journey of a beloved uncle

Gorden Roberts was a very important person in the life of his nephew Shane Walton and niece Melissa who wrote this tribute about him and her northern Metcalfe County, KY family members.

By Dr. Melissa Katherine Walton-Shirley
Reprinted with permission

I've waited until after Christmas to post what I put together for Shane's present. It was a labor of love.

When Uncle Gorden and Aunt Gordie Roberts' estate auctioned, I purchased his "Seabees trunk". It contained a lot of his special mementos from his time in the Navy served during World War II. The wooden box had "Seabees" and his name emblazoned on the top of it.

The box sat in our laundry room collecting dust with Tony's golf gloves etc. on top of it for over a decade . I had only taken a cursory look inside the day I bought it. During the pandemic I was cleaning out closets and thought I would sit down with it. I was amazed. It contained his naval uniform of two navy blue hats, a green cap, a navy blue sweater and a white sailor's shirt. I had no idea there were over 100 letters inside. From those letters I gleaned that he could get no mail back for up to six months at a stretch. I had no idea he had stayed so long in a small Japanese town. One of the pictures is of the market there.

Couple working to preserve Pleasant View Baptist Church

By Shelbie Landis

My name is Shelbie Landis, my husband, Coty. We purchased the beautiful historic Pleasant View Baptist Church in March of 2020, and I have set my sights on restoring her to her former glory! We are working tirelessly to secure funds to do just that.

We also plan to bring baptisms back to the mouth of Butler in the year 2021. A long overdue occurrence, I should say!

We have a Facebook page named "Saving Historic Pleasant View Baptist Church" that tracks the progress of our intentions. There, we also ask for donations, prayers, shared stories, or a simple "like."
