Gov. Beshear announces record high 3K COVID-19 cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the state's highest ever number of new daily COVID-19 cases and deaths, as the pandemic significantly worsens across the commonwealth and the United States.

"Like almost every state in America, we are seeing a surge here in Kentucky that is concerning and deadly," said Gov. Beshear. "But like every state in America, the power to stop it is in our hands.

"This amount of community spread continues to hit our more vulnerable. We are mourning another loss of a veteran from the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center.

"This is the toughest spot we've been in so far. Please follow those red zone county recommendations and school recommendations. You must do your part. If you are not wearing a mask, you are putting yourself at personal risk. We cannot let this escalation continue. Everybody's got to pull their weight. Come on, Team Kentucky. Too many of us are hurting and too many of us are dying."

KTC: Columbia licensing office temporarily closed for sanitizing

By Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Three regional driver licensing offices, including one in Columbia, and four smaller field offices operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have been closed temporarily due to cases of the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

Each office will be thoroughly sanitized in keeping with KYTC Heathy at Work guidelines, and all are expected to be reopened next week.

The affected KYTC Regional Driver Licensing Offices are in Lexington, Jackson and Columbia. The field offices are in Florence, Catlettsburg, Bowling Green and Owensboro.

"We are committed to being healthy at work," said Matt Cole, commissioner of the KYTC Department of Vehicle Regulation. "When a positive COVID-19 test result is found we are required to close affected facilities to keep employees and customers out of harm's way. That's what has happened at these affected offices. They are being sanitized and will reopen once it's determined they are safe for both employees and guests."

Regional offices continue to operate in these cities: Frankfort, Somerset, Richmond, Prestonsburg, Paducah, Morehead, Madisonville and Elizabethtown. Also open is a field office at Bowman Field in Louisville and a field office for non-U.S. residents in Buechel, Jefferson County.

In an effort to meet the workforce challenges from the steady decline in Kentucky's coal industry and the economic impacts of COVID-19, The Center for Rural Development's Coal Impacted Skills Training (CIST) Program is providing training opportunities for unemployed and underemployed individuals in 35 Southern and Eastern Kentucky counties.

What is the Coal Impacted Skills Training Program?
The program is designed to help individuals who have suffered job loss obtain training in order to better compete in the current job market and to assist businesses with employee training as a way to retain employees and enhance the skill sets of employees.

The Center for Rural Development will focus on providing training opportunities that meet local and regional job shortages in coal-impacted Kentucky counties within its service region. Areas identified in the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant for funding assistance include:

LCDHD: Adair still red, 13 new cases Thursday

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 8.29%.

While we continue to get caught up on our backlog of cases, we remain approximately 3 days behind. Even still, with the numbers we can report we have nine of our district's ten counties in the "red-critical" range of community-spread: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Pulaski, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne. This leaves only McCreary in the "orange-accelerated" range.

Please, let's all continue to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.

Active (Current) Cases: We added 5 more cases today than we released historic cases. Taking all things into account, this leaves us with 877 active cases in our district across all 10 of our district's 10 counties. On 11/12/2020 we were at our peak number of active cases, 877.
