Veterans Day

By Tommy Melson, November 11, 2020
I hear the cries of sacrifice, here and overseas
I hear the cries of families that lost loved ones, to fill a country's need
I feel the love and warmth, of this freedom filled land
I feel the steel of a soldier always ready to make a stand

I feel humbled, as the sun rises on this veteran's day
And I feel the tears well up, as a thankful heart prays
A heartfelt thanks to our armed forces and their families

Mystery: Who is the man praying in this photo?

2020-11-11 - Columbia, KY - Photo from CM keepsake photo archives.

Joe Hare did some detective work on the large photo from earlier today, checking the shadows for time of day, and finding this service from years past is likely a Memorial Day program at the Monument.

Probably from the late 1970s, his question for readers is, "Do you think that is Bro. Doug Mosley leading the prayer?"

The man praying in the group picture has been blown up and cropped for this post in case his identity can be added. Unfortunately, the old photo had no writing on the back to give a clue as to the year nor any names.

Gov. Beshear sounds alarm on COVID-19 surge: 2,700 new cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear warned every Kentuckian that they must take the pandemic more seriously in order to protect themselves, their families and their community. Kentuckians are in significantly greater danger of contracting COVID-19 now than they were in March or April; on Wednesday, the Governor reported 2,700 new cases, the state's highest ever daily total. In addition, the positivity rate has increased to 8.12%, the highest it has been since May 5.

"This entire state is in danger. COVID-19 is absolutely everywhere. We need everybody to wear your masks and follow red zone reduction recommendations and school recommendations. It is a must if you want to lessen the impact in your community," said Gov. Beshear.

On Veterans Day, the Governor also thanked veterans "for their service to this country and to this commonwealth." He continued, "We are deeply, deeply grateful."

Finally, Gov. Beshear updated Kentuckians on the Brent Spence Bridge.

Letter: Picture most likely Memorial Day

Joe Hare writes:
The Memorial Day program is usually held, at least partially, at the Monument as is pictured here. The shadows indicate that it was in the afternoon, which matches with the normal time of the Memorial Day program to honor our fallen heroes.

Any Veterans Day programs were usually held in the mornings, many times in conjunction with a breakfast. This program was usually not outside at the Memorial.

This is a great picture and was probably made in the late 1970's. Thanks for running it. Do you think that is Bro. Doug Mosley leading a prayer?

Armistice Day, 1930

By JIM

"We can think of that day twelve years ago, it had been thoroughly demonstrated that our country had not lost its soul as the result of its prosperity. It was shown that our people could rise to a great emergency, could cooperate with a great movement for the protection of liberty and justice. . .We can be proud of these memories. . ." (From "Armistice Day," an opinion piece in the Adair County News, November 11, 1930, page one, top center.)

On the afternoon of November 11, 1930, a crowd of several hundred people gathered on the public square in Columbia for a momentous occasion, the long delayed and much anticipated dedication of "a handsome bronze tablet... honoring the Adair County boys who were killed or died during the World War."

American Legion Post #99 had charge of the program, with Rollin Cundiff as Master of Ceremonies. Luminary Judge James Garnett, Director of the Bank of Columbia, "made an excellent address, presenting the Memorial tablet and dedicating it to the memory of Adair County's heroes." Richard Paull Hill, then seven years old, unveiled the plaque affixed to an exterior wall of the Bank of Columbia, and Ralph Hurt made a gracious speech of acceptance on behalf of the Legion.

The ceremony ended with well-known King Crenshaw singing "Tenting Tonight on the Old Campground," a song from the Civil War era, and then "the public square rang with the stirring strains of the 'Star-Spangled Banner' sung by the entire gathering" before the crowd began dispersing.

Kentucky motorists reminded to buckle up for holidays

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - As we enter the holiday season, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety is joining law enforcement around the Commonwealth for the annual Click It or Ticket campaign.

"It's such a simple act, yet gives you the best chance of surviving a crash" said KYTC State Highway Engineer James Ballinger. "Sometimes even the most attentive drivers are involved in a crash caused by other drivers, so taking two seconds to buckle up should be the first thing you do after getting into a vehicle."

The federally-funded campaign is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort running Nov. 16-29.

Grant creates pathway for military veterans to enter ag field

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is partnering with other agriculture organizations in administering a federal grant directed to establish and enhance farming opportunities for military veterans, Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles announced.

The $746,567 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant will provide agricultural opportunities for veterans and transitioning service members. Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA), along with the Kentucky Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (KCARD), Kentucky Sheep and Goat Development Office, Kentucky Horticulture Council, and University of Kentucky's Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky (CEDIK), will collaborate on administering the grant with additional support from the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation, Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs, and Hopkinsville Community College.

USDA's Enhancing Agricultural Opportunities for Military Veterans Program (AgVets) provides grants to aid military veterans interested in agriculture pursuits. In addition to providing educational opportunities, the grant is designed to develop a peer-to-peer network for veterans in agriculture, and construct a pathway that facilitates veterans' entrance into agriculture-related careers.

CPD: Columbia man charged with wanton endangerment

By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO
Columbia Police Department

The Columbia Police Department have charged a man with multiple felonies after receiving an "attempt to locate" call earlier in the evening on November 10, 2020.

The initial call was brought into KSP Post 15 concerning an 18 month old, said to be with her father, who would not return the child and was possibly under the influence.

First believed to be headed in the vicinity of South 61 and 768, the party was located by family members around Goodwill off Dohoney Trace. As family members called in to report that they had located the male subject and the child, the subject, according to witnesses, brandished a knife and drove behind Goodwill before fleeing on foot behind Whayne's Supply Store. The child was left in the vehicle.

The subject was soon located and apprehended as he was attempting to hide in brush along a fence row.
