Governor: Don't let surge overwhelm health care system

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear said all Kentuckians need to act now to stop a COVID-19 surge that could overwhelm the commonwealth's health care system and force businesses and schools to close again.

"In America and in Kentucky, this is getting increasingly more and more dangerous. The newest numbers are absolutely staggering," said Gov. Beshear. "We're losing 1,200 Americans per day and we have some individuals who say, 'Oh, it's not real.' Think about the amount of grief that is crying out every day in this country and this commonwealth based on those who we have lost."

Community leaders, businesses, schools and families in counties listed in the red zone on Thursdays should follow nine recommendations the following Monday through Sunday. All Kentuckians should consider adopting some of these recommendations to help their county avoid the red zone. Today's COVID-19 case report is the highest ever for a Monday.

The Governor reminded Kentuckians to vote safely in the 2020 general election tomorrow if they have not done so already. He encouraged all voters to wear a mask and stay six feet apart from others at the polls.

Quarles pushes support for farmers and restaurants

Opinion from Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles

Frankfort, KY - Across the nation and around the world, the number of coronavirus cases is on the rise. This alarming trend has raised concerns that the economic lockdown from the spring could return. Leaders in Frankfort can and should be creative in using available resources and developing guidelines to prevent further damage to Kentucky's economy this winter while also encouraging Kentuckians to follow CDC guidelines.

When the pandemic first began, I worked in Frankfort to make sure that agriculture remained open for business. As the providers of our food and fiber, our hard-working farmers needed to continue working to make sure Kentucky, the nation, and the world didn't go hungry. However, we did see our food supply tested in ways we thought previously unimaginable. The spread of the virus and the government forced shutdown of our economy resulted in a slowdown of meat processing which led to shortages of product, increases in the price of meat for consumers, and decreases in farm income. We can't let that happen again.

Letter: Economy Store grew to 5 locations

Jim writes:
By the time the Sheldon Willock's Economy Store opened in Columbia in August 1929, he already owned two others, one in Campbellsville and the other in Springfield. Some time later, he opened another in Hodgenville, and in 1937, the number grew to five with his purchase and renovation of the Farris & Bailey five and dime in Greensburg.

The Economy Store in Columbia closed in mid-1941, whereupon T.W. Roberts, who had managed the store for about eighteen months, immediately opened Roberts 5c-10c-25c in the same location on the Square.

Governor continues to press for action in red zone counties

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Sunday, Gov. Andy Beshear said there were more new cases of the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) recorded in Kentucky this week than any other since the beginning of the pandemic.

"If you're not alarmed by these record numbers of COVID-19 cases, you should be," said Gov. Beshear. "I know we're tired, but if we do not get the spread of this disease under control, we risk a darker, more deadly period this winter than we ever experienced in the spring."

Red zone counties should follow nine recommendations to slow the spread of COVID-19 and all counties should consider adopting some of these measures to help them avoid the red zone.

  • Employers allow employees to work from home when possible
  • Non-critical Government offices to operate virtually
  • Reduce in-person shopping; order online or curbside pickup
  • Order take-out; avoid dining in restaurants or bars
  • Prioritize businesses that follow and enforce mask mandate and other guidelines
  • Reschedule, postpone or cancel public and private events
  • Do not host or attend gatherings of any size
  • Avoid non-essential activities outside of your home
  • Reduce overall activity and contacts, and follow existing guidance
