Quarles challenges FFA members to serve as poll workers

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles is asking members and alumni of Kentucky's youth agriculture organizations to fulfill Secretary of State Michael Adams' call to recruit poll workers for the November 2020 election.

"Kentucky FFA has a long tradition of civic engagement," Commissioner Quarles said. "As Secretary Adams has made clear, we need young people to serve as poll workers so that we can put on a fair and safe election this fall. I am asking eligible members - and young alumni - of Kentucky FFA to respond to Secretary Adams' call to serve."

A precinct election officer works the polls all day on Election Day to ensure voting is conducted fairly and orderly. Each precinct is required to have four precinct election officers serve on the day of the election.

In order to become an election officer, an individual must be a qualified, registered voter. Individuals who will be 18 years old on or before November 3, 2020 are eligible to serve as officers. Other qualifications can be found online by visiting the State Board of Elections webpage at elect.ky.gov.

Lexmark presented with Employer Support Freedom Award

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Gov. Beshear on Wednesday welcomed to the Capitol executives with office equipment and solutions giant Lexmark International and members of the military.

"Today, we have an exciting recognition to announce. It is my great honor as the Governor of Kentucky to congratulate Lexmark International as one of this year's recipients of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award," the Governor said. "This award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. government to employers for their sustained support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve."

Among those present were Kentucky Adjutant Gen. Hal Lamberton, Col. (R) Phil Miller and Harry Wiley from the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as President and CEO of Lexmark Allen Waugerman, Brig. Gen. David Jenkins, Carl Sullivan and Patrick Brewer from Lexmark International.

"The Kentucky National Guard and Reserves are indispensable assets, and its soldiers are proud members of communities throughout Kentucky. They are our neighbors. They are the people that - outside of COVID - we sit in the bleachers with on Friday and in the pews with on Sunday," said Gov. Beshear. "Lexmark has a long history of success and innovation in the Bluegrass, and that clearly extends to the company's enlightened leadership, which supports its workers and all of our people with a strong military."

Governor continues to stress the importance of masks

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - As daily new cases of COVID-19 top 1,000 for the second consecutive day, Gov. Beshear continues to stress the importance of everyone wearing face coverings, calling it the single most important action all of us can take to fight COVID-19.

"We've got a lot of kids who went back to in-person classes this week," said Gov. Beshear. "Our kids can wear their masks. We as adults complain about it, but our kids can do it. I can tell you, my kids are willing to do it if it means they get to be back in school. Let's make sure we are wearing masks in our community."

He also encouraged Kentuckians to spread the word on social media using #MaskUpKY and #MaskUpKentucky hashtags. Starting next week, Kentuckians who use the hashtags will receive a #TeamKY mask if their post is featured as part of the Governor's daily 4 p.m. news conference.

Case Information
As of 4 p.m. Sept. 30, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 68,840 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 1,004 of which were newly reported Wednesday.

Extension of mail-in renewal for driver's licenses

Dennis Loy, Adair County Circuit Court Clerk, says that they are glad to accept renewal forms either by mail or dropped off in person.

By Crystal Staley/Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear, citing the need to help people stay healthy by avoiding crowds during flu season and the continuing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, today announced an extension of a special program for mail-in renewal of operator licenses, permits and state-issued identification cards that expired - or will expire - or were lost or stolen during the period of March 1, 2020 to Feb. 28, 2021. To be eligible, drivers must not require testing or retesting.

Under a new Official Order from Transportation Secretary Jim Gray, the mail option was extended to licenses bearing an expiration date as late as Feb. 28, 2021, with all such renewals to be processed by March 31, 2021. Up to now, the cutoff has been a Sept. 30, 2020 expiration date.

Those who qualify can apply for renewal or replacement remotely through the circuit court clerk in their county of residence. The lone exception is Fayette County, where all driver licensing functions - including mail-in renewal - have been transferred from the circuit court clerk to a new Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Regional Driver Licensing Office at 141 Leestown Center Way, Suite 125.

For residents of all other counties, check with the clerk as to preferred method, such as drop-off form or mail-in form. The form can be downloaded here: TC94191_sept2020.

Join the ACES Family Health Challenge: Get Moving, Get Healthy!

By Debra Cowan

This has been a crazy year complete with many challenges. While many of those challenges have been stressful, Adair County Elementary School (ACES) is offering a POSITIVE CHALLENGE for families; a Family Health Challenge for the month of October.

Families that accept the challenge may request a kit of materials and information that will guide them as they try small daily health challenges. The challenges are simple, but when added up over 30 days, hopefully families can look back and say they were a little more active, ate healthier and enjoyed some time together. Families that complete the challenge are eligible to win prizes.

To join the challenge, ACES families can request a FREE Family Health Kit from the ACES Family Resource Center by calling 270-384-9112 or sending an email to debbie.cowan@adair.kyschools.us. Parents can also send a note to their child's teacher.

Kits will be available for pick up on the front porch of the school on Thursday, October 1, 2020, between 8amCT and 2pmCT, or can be sent home with students on October 1st or 2nd.

This activity is a collaborative family involvement event sponsored by the FRC, Title I, Camp SAFARI and community partners such at 4-H, Adair Health Department, WATCH Coalition and KY-ASAP.

Face masks, social distancing, temperature checks and a 25 person guest limit were implemented to keep the event safe for students and other participants.

ISP began the series as a way to combine the best of the International Marketplace and International Education Week into one event during the Covid-19 Pandemic. ISP plans on showcasing a different country or geographic region every Wednesday during the fall semester.

Nursing Homes required to surveillance test

By Amy Neighbors, Administrator
Metcalfe County Nursing Home

Last week we began doing what is called “Surveillance Testing”. This is a routine COVID testing requirement that was mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.

All nursing homes across the country are now required to test staff on a routine basis. The frequency of the testing is based on the county’s positivity rate.

As of right now, Metcalfe County’s rate of positivity requires that we must test all our employees weekly. However, if our county’s rate increases, we could have to test as often as twice a week, if it lowers, it could be as little as once a month.
