Nursing Homes required to surveillance test By Amy Neighbors, Administrator Metcalfe County Nursing Home Last week we began doing what is called “Surveillance Testing”. This is a routine COVID testing requirement that was mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. All nursing homes across the country are now required to test staff on a routine basis. The frequency of the testing is based on the county’s positivity rate. As of right now, Metcalfe County’s rate of positivity requires that we must test all our employees weekly. However, if our county’s rate increases, we could have to test as often as twice a week, if it lowers, it could be as little as once a month. Another requirement is that we must also test our residents if we have an employee test positive. In the past 11 days we have tested all staff three times and residents twice. Thus far, we have had three employees test positive and no positive residents. Those three employees were and still are asymptomatic. They are/have been off from work for the required time and have/will return with proof of a negative test. This method of testing is expected to continue for quite some time and has created quite the workload on our nursing staff and administrative staff not to mention the stress and anxiety it causes our employees as we await results each week. We continually strive to keep our residents and each other safe as we follow all CDC, CMS, KDPH and OIG recommendations, guidelines, and regulations. Please continue to remember all of our residents and staff in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate these difficult times. This story was posted on 2020-09-30 09:03:16
