All has a Season

By Phillip Coffey

Fouls feuding in my backyard
Clashes among species,'Red Baron(s)'in air
'Doofus ' licking chops, tastes of defeated
Peace now in the 'Valley ', others don't care

Everything has 'flare -ups; then ceases
Like 'The Preacher' said,' All has a season '
Troubles a-plenty, number increases
Share the blessings, Christ be the reason.

Letter: Really enjoyed Mr. Watson's article

Wally Burress writes:
I really enjoyed Mr. Watson's article about E.L Dohoney. He grew up on the same farm in Milltown that Laura and I now own. I also grew up on that farm . The Dohoney family cemetery where his parents and several siblings are buried is located there. --Regards, Wally Burress

Letter: Lots of Kentuckians in Texas

Doug writes:
For those of you who don't know Texas well, Paris, Texas is in far north central Texas, about half way between Texarkana and Gainesville on US 82 and just a few miles south of the Oklahoma border. It's a good spot with good people.

There are lots of Kentuckians in Texas. At least a third of the volunteers at the Alamo were from Kentucky. Another third or so were from Tennessee. It was the place to be.

Letter: Hanging Tree?

Melissa Stone writes:
I was curious if anyone might know anything about a "hanging tree" on Dillon Street in Columbia. I was told as a child that one was located at the corner of Clinton and Dillon Street; but I also heard a few years ago that there was one located just up the road (when going toward town) on the left when going toward town.

I've asked some of the great historians from the area, but no one could confirm either of those two locations. --Melissa

Famous Natives of Adair Co.: Col. Ebenezer Lafayette Dohoney

By Mike Watson

When death called Eben[ezer] L. Dohoney on the evening of March 29, [1919] he took from life here to life hereafter a great intellect which had for more than eighty-six years animated the body of a man who measured up to every standard of citizenship--one who loved his God, his fellow man, his country and his family. Born in Adair County, Kentucky, October 13, 1832, of Colonial stock men and women who before the Revolution came from England, Ireland and Scotland to Virginia, where they might order their lives without the behests of kings and whose descendants went over the mountains into the fertile valleys of Kentucky, the advance guards of Pioneers who laid the foundation for our great inland empire.

Eben Dohoney spent his youthful years on his father's farm, getting such education as was then available in the new country. Later he taught the country school and afterwards completed his education in Columbia College and the Louisville Law School. He was admitted to the Kentucky bar, but deciding that greater opportunity lay in the great west he came in 1859 to this state [Texas] and having friends here in the families of the Williams, Ryan, Long and other Kentucky families who had preceded him, he settled in Paris.

Letter: Watch for baby Copperheads in September

Marie Freeman writes from southern Adair County:
Probably a lot of Kentuckians down here already know this, but I've lived here over 25 years and this is the first I've realized it. Yesterday I saw a small snake and I thought that really looks like a baby Copperhead. And I thought to myself a Copperhead would be bigger by now since it's fall. After a brief research, I realize this is when Copperheads give birth - September.

So just a heads-up to anyone that didn't know, like me, watch for those little venomous Copperheads! Great for the ecosystem but not so good for the yard. That's the first baby Copperhead I've seen since I've lived here. I've seen adults but never baby.

By Linda Waggener

Saturday, September 19, 2020 was a perfect day for the Plant Swap event at Columbia's historic Trabue Russell House.

A plant swap or plant exchange is for all people who love to garden. It is an opportunity for gardeners to get together to swap plants and gardening stories. It is a fun time.

This time of the year flower gardens are being cleaned up and many plants need to be thinned out.
