Adair County 4-H conducting two online surveys
By Tony Rose, Agent for 4-H Youth Development Adair County Extension Service Adair County 4-H 2020-2021 Program Year Survey Adair County 4-H is working to provide opportunities for our local youth and would like your input as we move forward. We are looking at some short term specialty 4-H Clubs and/or Workshops and the Grab and Go Educational projects like this spring. We would get 4-Hers the majority of the supplies (by mail and/or pick-up at the Extension Office) and then meet virtually to complete projects in a group setting while remaining Healthy at Home. We are also interested in getting your feedback on whether or not you would be interested in small group club meetings/workshops/daycamps if CDC and University of Kentucky guidelines were followed pertaining to COVID-19. Please note depending on the topic(s) of the lessons there could be a fee of $10 or less per participant per opportunity. Our goal is for the majority of the opportunities/kits be offered at no charge but sometimes there is not enough funding. We ask your family to complete this survey to provide feedback on what types of 4-H Youth Development programs/clubs that your child(ren) would be interested in. We are using the results to help us with planning and implementation. Virtual offerings will be conducted via Zoom, with secure registrations and procedures put into place. Reader Dwight Sexton wants Betty's to reopen Dwight Sexton hopes to see Betty's restaurant reopen soon. He's made his second request of Columbia Magazine to find out when they're going to reopen. (We ran their notice last week that the restaurant would reopen on the fourth. However, we received a call from prospective new owners saying that it might not happen due to continuing negotiations, and were told to hold on the What's Cooking daily menu ad.) Dwight hopes the current owners and prospective owners can work it out soon so the restaurant can reopen - and he said he really hopes they are not deadlocked like the Democrats and Republicans - completely unable to come to agreement! He is going to other restaurants and still he misses Betty's. Anyone with new details is asked to please reply for Dwight. 2020-09-04 09:28:39 | Comments | Printable version
Update on Rep. Bam Carney at mid-week visit Shared by Dr. John Chowning Mark Carney writes of his visit with his brother Bam: "I was able to enjoy another really good visit with Bam in Danville today. One of the highlights of the visit was showing him three poster boards of pictures that Kelly and Mackenzie put together. One board featured pictures of mainly family, one friends and the other co-workers and colleagues. Since he can only have one visitor a day, this was a way for us to bring more “visitors” in the room with him. Discovery - they are Jack-o-lantern mushrooms Beautiful orange fungi from Mt. Carmel - turns out these are Jack-o-lantern mushrooms, not edible... By Larry Clark I did a bit of research, and while not deadly, these mushrooms are noxious. If eaten they will cause gastrointestinal upset. So they are not edible. Like so many of earth's plants, these mushrooms have shown promise in fighting some cancers. One being pancreatic cancer. Have a wonderful day. 2020-09-04 08:35:40 | Comments | Printable version

KHEAA: September financial aid tip High school seniors planning to attend college or technical school next fall should begin work soon on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also called the FAFSA, according to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). The information on the FAFSA determines if students qualify for federal grants and student loans. It is also required to apply for state grants and scholarships. In addition, many colleges use the information to award their own grants and scholarships. The FAFSA can be submitted for the 2020-2021 school year beginning October 1, 2020. Some student aid programs have limited money and provide funds on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is important to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible. According to studentaid.gov, it should take most people about an hour to fill out the FAFSA for the first time, but there are some steps to complete before you start, and some documents you'll want to make sure you have at hand. You can read more about it at studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out. Even students who don't believe they will qualify for financial aid should submit the FAFSA. They may be surprised because student aid rules change all the time. KY nonprofits call on congressional delegation to act now Lexington, KY - Nonprofit leaders from across Kentucky held a press conference on Thursday calling on Kentucky's congressional delegation to move swiftly to pass another robust COVID-19 relief package of aid to state and local governments; direct supports for people; and relief for nonprofits working on the frontlines to serve Kentucky communities. Nonprofit leaders and Kentuckians discussed the urgent need for additional federal relief to address food and housing insecurity, health care, childcare, education and more, noting that Kentuckians are suffering, and nonprofits' ability to help meet their basic needs is in jeopardy if Congress fails to act soon. "This pandemic has put an extraordinary strain on our state and local budgets along with the community health centers, rural health clinics, community mental health centers, local health departments and hospitals that serve every single one of us," said Emily Beauregard, executive director of Kentucky Voices for Health. "The fact is that the majority of our healthcare safety-net providers are nonprofits running on tight margins that couldn't keep their lights on without Medicaid reimbursement. If Congress doesn't act soon, the pressure on our budget could result in cuts to Medicaid and other vital safety-net programs at a time when Kentuckians most need them to get through this crisis healthy and whole."
