Cheatham Center offers tools for faculty

By Ariel C. Emberton

Campbellsville, KY - When Campbellsville University faculty have questions about tools for teaching students, they have a place to go for answers.

"The Cheatham Center for Teaching and Learning is a resource for Campbellsville University faculty," Steve Skaggs, director of the Cheatham Center for Teaching and Learning, said.

"The center seeks to enable faculty effectiveness in teaching that fosters student learning and student success by providing training, support/consultation and other resources," he said.

The center is located on the bottom floor of the university's Montgomery Library and, according to Skaggs, is a place where faculty can meet, learn, collaborate and create. Faculty have access to a range of support services, resources and professional development activities within the center.

Governor's Wednesday Update: 546 new cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth.

"This is not going to last forever," the Governor said. "We are going to make it through, but we are going to have to do what it takes to make sure as many of our fellow Kentuckians make it through with us and that we protect each other's lives, lift up our economy and do everything we can to get our kids back in school."

Case Information

As of 4 p.m. Aug. 5, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 32,741 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 546 of which were newly reported Wednesday. Twenty-one of the newly reported cases were from children ages 5 and younger, including seven kids under a year in age with one of those being only 18 days old.

"Today's number strongly suggests and I believe it's evidence that face coverings are working," the Governor said. "Proving that even when other parts of the country may be escalating out of control, that we can still control our own destiny here in Kentucky with a small act that shows we care about each other."

Carol Perkins: Driving Guy bananas

Previous column: Looking to the Future

By Carol Perkins

When Guy started playing golf decades ago, his foursome played at the country club in Tompkinsville, which was one of the few in the area. At that time, there was a popular fruit and vegetable stand located between the golf course and the outskirts of Tompkinsville. After he left one Saturday morning, I had the "notion" to make banana pudding. (This was before farmers' markets became so popular.)

Not wanting to have to get myself "town" ready, I came up with an idea to get the bananas I needed. I didn't realize that my plan would cause such a commotion at the golf course, and later place Guy in the middle of a running joke about bananas. Here is what transpired.

GSE announces Demo Day winners

By JT Henderson

Frankfort, KY - The Governor's School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) hit the high point of its three-week program Aug. 1 with its annual professional business-pitch competition, where 18 teams of high school students presented their startup ideas virtually to an audience of more than 550 people and a prestigious panel of entrepreneur judges. Three teams came out on top, winning cash prizes to continue their innovative ventures.

During the highly competitive summer program, 18 teams of four students each developed business models, designed prototypes and learned from business entrepreneurs. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the competition was held virtually using Hopin, a web-based technology platform.

"I am so proud of all of our 72 young entrepreneurs and what they have accomplished in just three short weeks," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "I'm impressed with their ideas and with their tenacity to keep going even in the face of uncertainty this year. I am confident that our young entrepreneurs will help us meet future challenges."
