April is National Donate Life Month

Annual awareness campaign across the Commonwealth and the U.S. raises understanding and urgency around the importance of organ donation

Each National Donate Life Month we celebrate a ramped-up, month-long initiative to focus attention on the life and death issues surrounding organ/tissue donation and transplantation. Kentucky Circuit Court Clerks' Trust For Life (TFL) partner with Donate Life America (DLA) to share the importance of donor registration, to honor deceased and living donors, and celebrate the lifesaving and healing gift of transplantation.

"April is when we focus our efforts to educate as many Kentuckians as possible, that everyone can help save lives," states Dennis Loy, Adair County Circuit Court Clerk. "Becoming an organ and tissue donor takes less than a minute and gives hope to the over 1,000 people in Kentucky who are currently waiting for a transplant. The decision to register as a donor is the first chapter of an extraordinary story, a chapter which can bring life and healing to those in need, their families, and their friends."

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, it is essential to state that registering as an organ donor can be done while social distancing per Governor Beshear's recommendations. Visit www.donatelifeky.org or RegisterMe.org to quickly register as a donor.

In accordance with social distancing and healthy practices, Donate Life Month will be celebrated virtually via TFL and Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) social media pages. Each day in April, communities are encouraged to participate in the comfort of their home. Highlighted events include:

Thinking of this month fifty years ago

By Linda Waggener

"What were you doing half a century ago?" That was history writer JIM's question in his recent weekend article. Fifty years ago was a time of great change in the world, but not much of the news penetrated the rosy bubble through which I viewed it.

This March, 2020, remembering 50 years ago, Ed and I were three months into a marriage we had no idea would last 48 years, through September of 2018.

Sons Pen and Tom were only glimmers in our eyes, although, if we'd been asked to describe the children we wanted to bring into this life, they'd have been exactly who we'd have ordered.

So, if you were also alive back then, "What were YOU doing this month half a century ago?"

Census needs your attention by mail or internet

From the Office of Mayor Pamela Hoots

While we know there is a lot going on right now, the Census is still taking place and it's important. Our self-response numbers are just a smidge above the national average, but we want them to be leaps and bounds ahead! These numbers are important to our community in so many ways.

Everyone should have received their codes by now, so please fill out your 2020 Census and mail it in or go on the website and do so. Both methods are pretty simple. Make sure you and your family are counted!

Kentucky Color: Dull and Drab to Bright and Clear

By Billy Joe Fudge

My good friend Dr. Max recommended that I go ahead with cataract surgery a couple of years ago and I just was not in a good place to dive into it at that time. Now, after finally getting to the point that I was tired of seeing double out of my right eye and suffering a nighttime glare in both eyes which made it almost scary trying to drive, especially on rainy nights; I went for it!

Now, I am surely one happy camper with two new lenses and a new lease on life. Reading glasses are still needed to be see things up close but that is not a downer for me. So, with 20/20 vision I stand amazed at how dull and drab the world had become. Due to the slow progression of cataracts, I suppose that I had adjusted to life with less than perfect vision without really realizing how "less than perfect" my eyesight had really become.

I go outside at night and just stand looking up into the night I sky I remember from my past. A whole new Universe of bright shiny stars twinkle for me and planets wink at me while my old friend, the Man in the Moon smiles down on me once again.

I am so thankful for dedicated souls in the medical business from researchers, to inventors to doctors, to nurses and to all who are blessed by God with knowledge, understanding and the skills necessary to turn my world from dull and drab to bright and clear.
