Kentucky Derby Museum visit to ACPC

By Laura Marcum

Last week the Kentucky Derby Museum visited ACPC. Heather Hill, the KDM Outreach Coordinator, was the presenter. Each grade level had a different presentation. Kindergarten had a program entitled "Horse Tales". These students both listened and participated in horse themed stories. They also explored different elements that make up a story.

First grade had a program entitled "Racing Colors". These students learned that jockeys silks are filled with many shapes and colors. They also learned about Jockey safety equipment before designing their own jockey silks.

Second grade had a program entitled "Mathin' Around the Track". These students learned what it takes to win the Kentucky Derby. It takes a fast horse and a whole lot of math. Students were making a "real world connection" as they helped solve math problems while preparing their horse for the Kentucky Derby. This activity included using number properties and operations, measurement, geometry, probability, and algebra.

Adair Co. Sheriff's Office COVID-19 precedures

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

The Adair County Sheriff's Office is taking preventative measures to reduce potential spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Adair County. These measures will help to ensure police services to the residents of Adair County throughout this time. We must strive to take steps to protect our staff, so that we can continue to serve and protect our community.

Most of our staff is in the low risk category as far as serious health risk from virus due to age of workforce. However, we are at high risk as carriers due to the amount of contact we have with the public. In addition, we have a lot of contact with the elderly who are at high risk.

Please be aware of the following:

History Monday: Some Early History of Cane Valley, Part 2

Previously: History Monday - early Cane Valley, KY, part I

By Mike Watson

"Cane Valley Is Still on the Map and Very Much Alive--We are located six miles from Columbia on the Campbellsville and Columbia turnpike road and surrounded by the best or so good farming country as there is in Kentucky. Our citizenship has increased ten percent in the last five years. There is not a town in the state that will exceed us for business according to our population. The Dudgeon Co., manufacturers of stoves, brooms, and washing machines. They carry a full line of oils and paints. R.T. Dudgeon, the hustling stove man, who also carries a full line of paints, roofing and sheet metal. The Cane Valley Milling Co is doing a fine business. The saw mill at this place has done the larger amount of business during 1920 than any two years in past history. Judd Brothers are the leading contractors of this section and are enjoying a fine business.

Business suggestion: Grocery hours for seniors

By Vicky Pike

I would like to suggest local grocery stores would have a few hours where seniors could shop after the stores have been cleaned over night.

This would be the safest time for them to shop right after the store is cleaned and restocked. Also so employees might help them with their shopping should they need it. Most seniors may not be comfortable with order and pick up.

40 at Betty's eligible for unemployment after today

By Linda Waggener

Even with drive-through and carry out capabilities, it was determined there'd be too much loss for their sit-down restaurant to stay open until things change - that's what owners and managers of Betty's OK Country Cooking had to tell 40 employees after Gov. Beshear's morning announcement, Monday, March 16, 2020.

When you click on today's "What's Cooking" you'll find Betty's OK Country Cooking's notice that the hot bar will be 35% OFF until 3pm or until food is gone, and then they will be closing until the ban on public dining rooms is lifted.

Coronavirus/COVID-19 has grown to seven counties in the state - a total of 21 cases: six in Harrison County, six in Jefferson, five in Fayette, one in Montgomery, one in Bourbon, one in Nelson, and one in Clark.

DAY TRIP: scenic 704 in Cumberland County, KY

By Linda Waggener

If you just need a short drive to appreciate the countryside, this is a favorite. One of our most highly recommended day trips from Columbia is the drive south into Cumberland County, Kentucky on Highway 704.

It's a different world in each season. As we near the close of winter 2020, a few photos are linked to this story to show how things are now.

A surprising part of this visit was discovering that nearly 2,000 acres of the Crocus Creek Valley as you leave Adair and head into Cumberland County and the Amandaville community, are for sale and can be purchased right now.

So, I'm thinking that if I play the lottery, and if I win the lottery, I'll buy it all and preserve every rolling hill, creek, animal, historic home and building - especially that smokehouse with the horseshoes nailed to the front - and just sit back and invite company to come and enjoy.
