Letter: In appreciation of JIM

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Jim, I simply cannot control my eagerness to turn my attention each Sunday morning to the chronicle of your weekly time travels. You are an absolute jewel in the crown of the Kingdom of Adair. Thanks for sharing our past with us and for doing so in your unique, humorous style.

Oh and by the way, it took four trips around the Square so to speak, for my 21st century mind to finally bring "slaughtered school teacher J.V. Dudley" back to the land of the living! "Slathered" is certainly not a much used verb in Great Wooded South dissertations these days and I appreciate you adding it back into our present-day, GWS Lexicon. From this day forward, my biscuit will forever be "slathered" with butter! --BJF

December 1, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the December 1, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included an appreciation of Nolen Roberts, an appreciation of the Lindsey Wilson College basketball team, inauguration plans, Christmas decorations, and a call for papers on the science of moustachery. --Pen

To help his fellow man
Up until six or seven years ago, Robert Gentry of Gentry's General Store at Goodin's Crossroads says folks who lived down Bryant's Creek Road used to risk life and conveyance when they ventured onto Highway 206 at the intersection beside his business.

But that was before a good man, Nolen Roberts, took care of the situation with a mirror.

You see, the road curves leftward above the intersection, and the families who used Bryant's Creek Road to come from Pyles Hollow or even Little Cake can't see up the road toward Pellyton.

Roberts, who lives in the intersection and is well known to hundreds of Adair County school students - he drives a bus - erected a rectangular mirror some eight-to-ten feet off the ground. The mirror measures about three feet by two feet.

Now, when a Bryant's Creek Road driver approaches the intersection, he needs only to check the mirror to see how traffic conditions are toward the north.

November 1934 -- Homecoming, the President's visit, and news from the county

Eighty-five years ago -- November 1934 -- America continued to languish in what surely seemed a never-ending economic depression. "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" made its radio debut on the 22nd to instant acclaim, and in a wild shootout on the 27th, FBI agents took down Public Enemy # 1, notorious gangster Lester Joseph Gillis, better known to the public by his alias, George "Baby Face" Nelson. But meanwhile, back in The Shire...

By JIM

November 1934 hit midpoint and headed toward Thanksgiving and December, and Columbia prepared for the welcome onslaught of visitors to the Lindsey Wilson Homecoming, set for Friday the 23rd. Already, over one hundred alumni and other former matriculants had made reservations for the banquet on that evening, with another two hundred or more expected for the event. The more prominent graduates who already had confirmed attendance included Dr. W.A. Weldon of Glasgow, Class of 1912, and Elam Huddleston '06, then serving Kentucky State Treasurer.

As prelude to the much-anticipated banquet, Rev. Frank Hulse, Class of 1930, was scheduled to give the devotional at 9:45 that morning, with L.C. Harrison '25 to follow with the welcome address. Lindsey's gridiron team, fresh off a victory the previous weekend against Taylor County High and holding a season record of 3-2, was ready to take on Lebanon's St. Augustine Academy at 2 p.m. sharp, admission to the game 25 cents. All in all, the day held promise of fun-filled activities, fond reminiscing, and catching up with old friends, and many homes in Columbia planned to host one or more out of town guests for the weekend.

The Homecoming shared top billing on the front page with another gathering, this of a considerably larger magnitude.

J.O.Y. Ministries kicks off annual fundraiser

From Maggie Coleman, Treasurer

Thank you very much to our community for the support that you have shown to J.O.Y. Ministries in the past. Many have donated generously to support our local Missions Week and youth mission trips, the emergency shelter, or the general fund that runs the Crisis Resource Center.

It is time for J.O.Y. to undertake our annual fundraiser for our general fund to continue these ministries. We have chosen the theme "Brighten Our Community with J.O.Y." and set a goal to raise $12,000 to cover our basic costs for the year. The theme invites donors to brighten Adair County with God's light through a financial gift, so that others may see our deeds and we may glorify God (Matthew 5:16).
