Carol Perkins: Wardrobe reminiscing

Previous column: Little things can have a big effect

By Carol Perkins

When my friend told me about finding some old belts in the back of her closet, we both reminisced about the days when they were part of our wardrobe. Shirt-waist dresses required belts, and they became just as much of an accessory as a necklace or gloves. The girls of the fifties and sixties wore tiny belts that cinched the waist and accented church dresses. I liked wearing a red belt with something gray, but white and black belts were the most popular. Other than cowboy belts for their Western wear, I doubt any woman wears a belt today.

The type of belt we wore depended on our outfits. In addition to the thin ones, by the time I was in high school, belts increased in width and were often made of fabric, such as one that wrapped around the midriff and tied in the front or was threaded through a metal ring and pulled tight to the waist.

Annual student-faculty game brings LWC community together

By Travis Smith

Lindsey Wilson College students, faculty and staff hit the court for friendly competition and a good cause on Thursday evening.

The third-annual Lindsey Wilson student-faculty & staff basketball game was held in Biggers Sports Center in front of an energetic crowd of nearly 350 students and onlookers. Fans were encouraged to bring canned food items to donate to Joy Ministries of Columbia, Kentucky.

SGA President and Business Administration Senior Jakob Beckley of Pleasureville, Ky., was public address announcer for the game. Beckley said that the event works well because of the harmony that exists between everyone.

"Lindsey Wilson has a very tight knit family atmosphere that includes strong relationships between students and our faculty and staff," said Beckley. "I think those relationships create the perfect atmosphere for this annual event."

Quarles applauds China lifting ban on U.S. poultry

Poultry Is Kentucky's Leading Ag Commodity at $1.3 Billion

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles today applauded the announcement from the Trump Administration that the People's Republic of China has agreed to lift its ban on poultry imports from the United States.

"The announcement today from U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer that China is lifting its four-year ban on U.S. poultry exports is welcome news for poultry producers across the Commonwealth and the nation," Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said. "Poultry is the number one agricultural commodity produced in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This news is a step in the right direction, and I am cautiously optimistic that this step will result in more positive trade news in the coming months. We must continue working to ensure the American farmer is treated fairly, and to press for soybean and grain trade access to China."

Poultry and eggs accounted for $1.31 billion in cash receipts in Kentucky in 2017, up 18.3 percent from 2012, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. In addition, the Kentucky Poultry Federation says one of every four rows of corn and soybeans grown in the Commonwealth goes to feed for Kentucky poultry.

Jail heat has been on all week, set according to jail standards

By Linda Waggener

Adair County Jailer Joey White said there is no truth to the rumor that the heat has been off in the jail and that visitors are welcome to walk in at any time to check on conditions.

There have been no times it has been turned down nor off, and no electrical outages that would have upset the heating and cooling system.

The equipment, he said, has performed perfectly and the heat has been on continuously. When the temperature falls below 68 degrees, the heat automatically kicks on. When the temperature rises above 72 degrees the air conditioner automatically kicks on.
