Letter: Hunters, please be courteous

By Joyce Coomer

I have been around people who hunt my entire life. I was taught that if you wanted to hunt on someone else's land, you asked their permission. You were also supposed to learn where property lines ran so that you wouldn't inadvertently be hunting on someone who didn't want anyone hunting on their property besides their family members.

You were also supposed to be courteous enough to inform people when you were going to be hunting on them. Either call them, stop by their house, or -- at the very least -- park your vehicle beside their driveway so they knew who was hunting that day.

Wintry conditions possible tonight into Tuesday morning

State transportation crews ready to respond to first winter event this snow and ice season. Click read more for tips from KYTC for preparation and safer driving in winter conditions.

By Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - With snow and ice season kicking off November 11, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) nearly 2,000 snowfighters have stocked salt supplies, trained crews and 1,400 plow trucks ready to respond as needed to the state's first snow event of the season expected to hit portions of the state tonight. Statewide, slick road conditions and low visibility are possible Monday night into Tuesday morning's commute.

"More than half of our highway district snowfighter crews will be reporting tonight to monitor conditions and combat the elements in an effort to keep Kentuckians safely moving through the Tuesday morning commute," said KYTC Secretary Greg Thomas. "Our frontline and operations staff have been preparing for months and we encourage motorists to prepare for the change in road conditions by staying weather alert, getting vehicles winter ready and driving with caution."

LWC/ISP enjoying a night out on the town

By Sabine Eastham

Last Friday, November 8, 2019, Veronica and Earl Klinglesmith, knights in shining armor, aka as part of our wonderful network of host families in a 4 country area, took a group of 9 international students to "Froggett's 55 Jamboree" in Campbellsville, KY, to listen to southern rock and country music.

The ladies sat down to chow down on hot dogs, burgers and fries, as they took in the unique atmosphere. A band member announced the special guests from the Lindsey Wilson College, coming from far away countries as the Republic of South Korea, Japan and Ireland and dedicated their next song to them. That got them going and they started to dance. They were enthralled by a little girl that gravitated to them and kept pulling them on the floor to dance.

This was an experience unlike any other they had so far. One they will log into their memory books for sure. After all, what is a "study abroad" experience about if not seeking unique opportunities taking in the allure and culture of a new land, with its many facets as we have in the U.S.?

KTC District 3 Crews preparing for possible winter weather

By Wes Watt

Bowling Green, KY - Crews from every county in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 area stand ready to respond to a possible winter weather event that could create hazardous driving conditions tonight. Our snow & ice team has been monitoring forecast over the weekend and throughout the day today. A possible minor winter weather system could move through the area tonight.

Since the system is coming in as rain first, crews are not able to put down anti-icing material on the roadway prior to the weather system moving in. The warm weather Sunday and Monday will help reduce the possibility of hazardous road conditions, but temperatures are supposed to plummet overnight. If there is water on the roadway during this time it could freeze creating some icy conditions.

Motorists should keep this in mind for travel tonight and during their morning commute on Tuesday. Folks should give themselves some extra time to clear windshields and warm vehicles prior to departing.

Veterans Day

By Tommy Melson

As the sun rises, on a cold November day... My heart goes out to our veterans, who pay a heavy price, for our freedom filled ways... My heart goes out to the families that sacrificed the one's they loved, when they didn't come home... My heart goes out to the ones that's made it back but their mind still plays a living hell in some far away war zone... My heart goes out to our armed forces, present, future and past... Because a nation owes you, from the first soldier to the last....... Happy much deserved Veterans Day.

A Veterans Day Tribute

Veterans Day 2019. Every veteran is appreciated for all services they have rendered to the greatest country. No man or woman wants to go to war, but to protect the sanctity of home and family it is often necessary. So many have gone to serve and never returned home again. Let us pray for peace. Let us give thanks to all who have sacrificed. Let us thank a veteran today.

A Four Star Family, World War II--
In honor of our dad, Carl Watson, and our uncles, Cameron, Hugh and William, all of whom served overseas in World War II, here is a short, front page item from The Adair County News, 9 June 1943.
"A Four Star Family--When William Watson left today for Fort Benjamin Harrison to enter the Armed Forces, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Watson, of Inroad, became the head of a 'four star family.' perhaps the only one in all of Adair County. William's three brothers were already in service and he was the only remaining son that Mr. & Mrs. Watson could offer to Uncle Sam. Cameron Watson is stationed in Louisiana, Carl and Hugh Watson are stationed at camps in Washington State..."
There were undoubtedly other four star families in Adair County before the World War ended. In lieu of a "light in the window" the families of servicemen obtained and proudly posted in a front window, a card with luminescent stars, one for each one from that household serving the United States of America.
