From the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, 29th Judicial Circuit

On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, Michael Dewayne Corbin, age 43, was sentenced by Adair Circuit Judge Judy Vance Murphy for several drug-related offenses. Judge Murphy accepted the recommendation of Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright and sentenced Corbin to a total of twenty-one (21) years in prison for his crimes, which occurred in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Carol Perkins: Hummingbirds at the feeder

Previous Column: May I help you?

By Carol Perkins

Two hummingbirds live in our forest and they do not get along. I hear that is the nature of the hummingbird, but I didn't believe it until I saw them in action.

Having taken on a new personality, evidently, bird watching has become my new early morning hobby. I'm not interested in studying them; I am only interested in observing their habits and enjoying their beauty. On second thought, I suppose that is a study.

When I noticed a couple of hummingbirds drawing from my flowers, I decided to buy a feeder. In preparing to be a hummingbird mother, I thought I knew how to prepare it and followed the directions. How much information does one need to put water and sugar in a container, shake it, and wait? Obviously, I did something wrong because the birds circled and flew away.

New Statewide Victims Assistance Program

Trained advocates will provide support to victims at every KSP post in the Commonwealth

By Nicole Burton/Josh Lawson

Elizabethtown, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin today joined with Kentucky State Police, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, and the federal Office of Justice Programs, within the Department of Justice, to announce a new initiative that will provide trained advocates at every KSP post to support and assist victims of crime.

KSP is among the first state police agencies to implement this program on a statewide basis.

The program, called Victim Advocate Support Services (VASS), is launching this fall with a dual purpose. Advocates will administer care to crime victims - or those involved in traumatic events - connecting them with immediate resources, such as mental health services, crisis intervention or legal support. These skilled professionals will also serve as liaisons between law enforcement and the victim, simultaneously helping victims navigate the system while allowing detectives to focus more efficiently on the details of the case.

Letter: Elementary school beverage container regulations

By Lisa Blackaby

I recently had a conversation with my lactose-intolerant grandson about taking a bottle of water to school for his lunch. We discussed the pros and cons of the different options of plastic, glass and stainless steel.

A few days later I found the perfect child sized stainless steel bottle for his lunch bag. He was excited to use his bottle that would keep his water cold, not leach chemicals into his water and not break. He proudly packed his lunch with his shiny new bottle filled with water and headed to school. This is no different than what many of us did as children before plastics became so abundant. We took our glass bottles or thermos filled with our beverage of choice no questions asked.

Not so for the children of this time. He was told only clear containers allowed at our schools. The children might just have fruit juice or koolaid in that opaque environmentally friendly container.

We could use a little common sense when it comes to creating these rules in our schools. --Lisa
