911 Poem

By Tommy Melson
Eighteen years ago, today... Three thousand lives perished and their tomorrow never came... The scar left behind, is still fresh on our hearts and minds... Of innocent lives lost from the evil and unkind... We still fight for their memory on far away shores and here at home... And their cries we still feel. A memory set in stone......... May 911 forever teach us not to let our guard again...... Please thank your soldiers and first responders.....

Memories of Creelsboro, come join us Saturday

Remembering the town of Creelsboro, KY in childhood, walking to Union Chapel Elementary School, stopping to thread Cora Garner's needle on the way in exchange for a sausage biscuit, and great teachers like Mary Bessie Malone, Eliza Pearl Garner, Opal Coffey, Alene Grider, Joe F. Campbell and more.

By Brenda Higginbotham

My town is loaded with awesome memories and a lifetime of friends. We had two churches, two stores and a one-room school. That small town molded us into the people we are today.

I was born and raised in Creelsboro. My life began in the Dalton Hollow, we later moved to the Smith house and then to the Buster place.

My brother, my sister and I would walk to school - around a four-mile walk. On the way to school, we would stop and thread Cora Garner's needle. She would be waiting by the road to have us thread that needle. This was the first memory I had of "helping others". Ms. Cora would give us a sausage and biscuit for threading her needle, and boy was that a treat. Sisty years have passed and I still remember that sweet lady so vividly.

Who are the Adair County Band of Brothers?

"Just come," Morrison says, "rain or shine I'll be there. We can have as many volunteers as there are people called to help others."

By Linda Waggener

The Band of Brothers is a men's fellowship group at the Columbia Christian church. Their projects have been from very large to small, but always about giving of themselves to help others in need.

Ellen Zornes, President of the Adair Heritage Association, reached out to the band of Brothers to ask about a possible service project at the historic Rosenwald school in the Flatwoods section of Adair County, KY.

Bobby Morrison agreed to meet with some of the interested parties who hoped to save the school to survey needs that the band if brothers might possibly do. That survey resulted in a commitment and a call for help to begin their restoration project.

Suicide Prevention is focus at ACHS & ACMS in September

The key is identifying which emotions you wrestle with most and which strengths help you through tough times... asking for support is a sign of strength and not weakness.

By Robin Loy
College and Career Readiness Counselor, Adair County High School

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month--a time to share resources and our own stories of hope, help, and strength.

In an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic, the Adair County School's Sources of Strength programs at ACHS and ACMS are encouraging students to use this month to begin reaching out to those battling a mental health condition or those who have been affected by suicide. The SOS groups aim to raise awareness, and connect those with suicidal ideation to trusted adults and treatment services that are available in our school and community.
