October 8, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the October 8, 1977 edition of the Daily Statesman. Topics included the ongoing debate about traffic on the Square, a rousing political endorsement, a look at a couple of peer communities, and a story about a cat from times when there was enough room under the hood of a truck for a full-sized cat to comfortably be. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

Finally, the solution to the traffic mess on the Square in Colmbia has come through, thanks to the clear thinking of Dagwood Gore and Grover Cleveland Gilpin. They say, erect signs at each entrance to the Square which will say: "Get where you're going the best damned way you can!" That way, if a person wants to do to the Post Office from Jamestown Street, he'd just cut across the Square from Jeffries Hardware to Firestone, and be where he's going. It shouldn't be any worse.

The Square would make a grand dodg'em
The car companies could make special models for traveling in Columbia, much as they make special models for California, to comply with that state's tough emissions standards. In Columbia, the cars would have a big bumper all the way around the car, so that it would be safe to get hit from any direction. If a guy gets in your way, just give him a knock the way the kids do with electric bumper cars at Beech Bend Park.

Dagwood's cat needs a home
It is an old, yeller-looking cat, and they say it belongs to Dagwood Gore of Columbia Candy Company, that it is his guard cat. Anyway, when Clyde Beard got in his truck the day before yesterday to start it, both the motor and Dagwood's guard cat purred to life.

ISP Labor Day Weekend Fun

By Sabine Eastham

On August 31, 2019, fourteen international students headed out for some Labor Day Fun. The first stop was the "Magic Wok" in Campbellsville, KY. Doyeong Kim from Jinju, South Korea, who prefers to be called "Ryan", said he wants to eat there every week. Mikoto Yamada, from Yokohama, Japan, said this was the first time she used chopsticks since they arrived here in August 15. I wonder if that thought came up as they prepared for their departure to the U.S. If you do something daily and all of a sudden stop doing it- you just then realize how much you miss it!

Our domestic students Dejah Smith from Midway, GA and Brandon Reed, Louisville,KY, showed off their chopstick-using skills having learned those and more over the last few semesters of being ISP Welcome Ambassadors!

The group completed their outing at Philip's Lanes, the Campbellsville bowling alley, where much fun was had.

Letter: Why is Sulphur Well called The Gum?

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Visited there many times from early childhood up until just a year or so ago and I continue to consider it an under-promoted, local resource and historic attraction.

Concerning its local tag of "The Gum", I can see some particular definitions of "gum" that may have been a catalyst to that name but is there a story or stories which reveal the source of "The Gum"? --BJF
Comments re photo 84936 A peaceful place to end a hot August day
Billy Joe, I grew up there and have no idea why it was called that. I will be asking that question as I travel and visit with people from North Metcalfe County.

CPD: Meth arrest

By Officer Adam Cravens

The Columbia Police Department received a complaint on Saturday, August 31, 2019, of a female subject passed out in a vehicle along with another male and small child parked in a gravel lot near Sleep Inn and Goodwill.

When officers responded, the vehicle was no longer in the area. However, a vehicle matching the initial description was later located at FiveStar on Hudson Street, and contact was made with a male and female who had a three year old male child with them.

Search of the vehicle yielded finding of narcotics, drug paraphernalia and a crystal substance consistent with methamphetamine.
