Letter: Two other Kentucky ferries

Robert Cumming writes:
Linda I know of two other operating ferries in Kentucky besides Black's Ferry between Monroe and Cumberland counties. There is a state ferry operating at the end of Tates Creek Rd between Fayette and Madison counties across the Kentucky river.

Anderson Ferry (toll) operates in northern Kentucky along Route 8 at Constance going across the Ohio River to the west side of Cincinnati's Saylor Park, a block from former Cincinnati Reds star Pete Rose's boyhood home. --Robert

Letter: Link updated

Harry Mack writes:
It appears that The Journal-Enterprise does not want anyone to read the full article. The link takes you to a page where they want you to log in or subscribe. This is the case with many sites that post stories and then provides a link to the full story, not just yours. I can't understand why a publication thinks someone is going to subscribe just to read one article. When I run into one of those, I just close it out. If it is a story that may have state or national coverage, I will do a search to find another publication that has the story without all the log-in or subscribe baloney. I am not mad at you because you were probably not aware of this. --Harry

Harry, Thanks for writing, and apologies for the link -- we've pulled the summary from our front page, and marked the link as "Subscription Required" so that folks will know what to expect before anyone clicks it in the future. --Pen

Letter: Ferry was 24/7, minus one

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
FYI Back during my firefighting days we used the ferry a lot. They were available for transporting passengers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with the exception of Sunday mornings between 10 AM and 11ish. They transported church goers, changed oil in the engine while church was going on and were ready to transport those church goers on their way home from church. I'm assuming they still keep the same schedule. --BJF

300-million-year-old fossil found at Webster Co. coal mine

By Matt Hughes, The Journal-Enterprise

The story of coal began long ago on the floor of ancient, dense forests that grew in the midst of swampy wetlands, where organic matter such as plants and algae would sink to the bottom and get compressed under the weight of overlying mud and vegetation. As the plant matter sifted deeper into the ground, away from oxygen, it decomposed at a slower rate than normal, leaving behind most of its carbon in the form of a substance known as peat. With heat, pressure and the passage of time that peat eventually becomes coal.

Miners at Dotiki mining got a reminder about the origins of their product last week when a bit of history fell right out of the ceiling.

Carol Perkins: Advenures in Italy, Part 2

Read all of Carol's Adventures in Italy: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

By Carol Perkins

As our vacation in Italy continued, Guy and Noah left that second morning for a tour called "Gladiators of the Coliseum," which took them to the floor of the famous landmark to learn about the Gladiators, how they trained, and where the animals were caged.

The heat had tempered their day, so an hour before the tour ended, I heard a knock on the door. Both stood before me white as a sheet and sweat seeping through their shirts. "We had to get out or die," Guy said. "Even the guide didn't want to be there. I hope that is the last of the tours you have scheduled," he said with Noah shaking his head in agreement as if this were my fault! Noah was also sick from the heat, so I babied him them rest of the day.

After seeing all the sites in Rome and with one day to spare before going to Florence, I suggested we take the fast train south to Naples (we had Eurail passes) and then on to Pompeii, famous for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, in 79 AD.

The train station is extremely crowded so as I had seen actors in movies do, we stood looking up at the flashing arrival and departure boards, to find our platform number and dash to board the train.

Governor issues statement after signing pension bill

By Nicole Burton

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin joined state legislators and stakeholder groups on Wednesday afternoon in Frankfort to officially sign into law House Bill 1, which was passed in special session by the General Assembly earlier in the day.

Gov. Bevin released the following statement regarding HB 1, which delivers pension relief for Kentucky's regional universities and quasi-governmental agencies:
"We are grateful for the diligent work of fiscally responsible House and Senate members who came together to pass HB1. I applaud their dedication to delivering much-needed financial relief for Kentucky's quasi-governmental agencies and regional universities. This legislation provides a viable path forward for our mental health agencies, rape crisis centers, local health departments, and other community agencies whose dedicated employees provide critical services to citizens across the Commonwealth. While we have much work yet to do in addressing our $60 billion public pension crisis, HB 1 represents a positive step forward. I am confident that with continued collaboration and hard work, we can save our pension system and preserve it for the thousands of hardworking men and women whose financial futures depend on it."

Lunch visit turns into planned Day Trip to ferry

By Linda Waggener

A recent lunchtime trip resulted in the discovery of old friends, Monroe County BBQ and discovery a ferry nearby on the Cumberland River that requires a future Day Trip.

Once upon a time there was a business on Hudson Street in Columbia called Red Barn Bar-B-Q owned by Marketta and Gary Dubree from Tompkinsville, KY. They brought real Monroe County style barbecue to Adair County and were quickly adopted by many.
