Ann Pearson writes:
We all pay school tax on everything, we have the lottery and still we are told the schools can't afford enough books and needed supplies and parents are asked to pay for these things. It would be nice if we could use some of that money to help the students. --Ann

Letter: Lidocaine to the rescue

Cynthia A. Meyer writes:
Linda: There are many home remedies for chigger, skeeter, wasper and other sorts of things that make you itch, but the "aftersun" gels you get in just about any store so far have worked wonders for me...- Just make sure it contains Lidocaine, and after you shower make sure you reapply. To my amazement it even worked on hives- wish I had discovered that one a bit sooner! --Cynthia

KY has a nearly $200M budget surplus

By Tom Loftus, Louisville Courier Journal

Kentucky tax revenues outperformed expectations in the recently ended fiscal year, leaving the state with a $194.5 million surplus on July 1. The surplus should allow the state to cover some unbudgeted expenses, transfer $70 million to the Teachers' Retirement System medical insurance fund, and give a little help to the state's most troubled pension plan, which provides retirement benefits for most state workers.

While the surplus is good news, it represents less than 2% above the $11.2 billion in tax revenue already anticipated during the fiscal year, and it will have only a tiny effect on Kentucky's long-term financial problems caused by the $42.7 billion in unfunded liabilities for its retirement plans.

Letter - what I do for Chigger bites and Poison Ivy

In the laundry aisle, get a bar of Fels naptha soap. This is what I do for chigger bites. I use it on poison ivy, chiggers. It's only like a dollar a bar.

And you can also make a homemade laundry soap out of it to wash your clothes to get them out. It's the only soap that will remove poison ivy from your clothes. That little thing I learned after living in the woods all these years. I just shave some off the bar and boil it on the stove top to make liquid soap and then wash my clothes. You can also add some borax and it will help too.

You might try a little area of skin first to make sure you aren't sensitive just to be cautious. My grandmother used this soap been around forever. -- Marie Freeman
