Authorities identify body found in 1986 in McCreary Co.

By Billy Kobin, Louisville Courier Journal

In November 1986, a body was discovered in Strunk, a small Kentucky coal town in Daniel Boone National Forest near the Tennessee border. Authorities attempted to identify the body and pursued several leads, but the case eventually went cold without anyone finding out who the victim was.

Nearly 33 years later, Kentucky State Police announced Thursday they are able to identify the body as belonging to a man from Norfolk, Virginia. Gerald Swindell was 29 years old when he went missing from Norfolk, according to a Kentucky State Police news release.

Kentucky water treatment plants exceed quality standards

Burkesville, Jamestown, Glasgow and Liberty among plants recognized.

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky's Energy and Environment Cabinet's Division of Water has recognized 37 surface water treatment plants in Kentucky for meeting the goals of Kentucky's Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP), for 2018.

AWOP is a multi-state initiative administered through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The purpose of AWOP is to encourage drinking water systems to voluntarily achieve optimization goals that are more stringent than current regulations. Twenty-six states, including Kentucky, participate in AWOP. All of Kentucky's public water systems are encouraged to participate in AWOP in order to provide the highest quality drinking water to their customers.

AWOP promotes improving the operation of existing facilities rather than implementing costly capital improvements. In doing so, the program provides tools and approaches for drinking water systems to meet water quality optimization goals and provide an increased and sustainable level of public health protection to consumers.

Bevin vs. Beshear race is already negative

By Phillip M. Bailey, Louisville Courier Journal

The day after the 2019 Kentucky primary, voters were already being bombarded with TV attack ads aimed at bringing down Republican incumbent Matt Bevin and Democratic challenger Andy Beshear. The early jockeying shows the next six months will be defined as much by rapid-fire accusations of corruption between the two men as pension reform, abortion rights or legalizing medical marijuana.

"Bevin and Beshear have a powerful rivalry that guarantees the election will be nasty," said Stephen Voss, a University of Kentucky political science professor.

Memorial Day weekend launches summer boating season

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - It's going to feel a lot like summer across Kentucky for the unofficial start of the season.

For many anglers, paddlers and pleasure boaters, relief from the warmer weather over the Memorial Day holiday weekend on May 25-27, 2019 will come on one of Kentucky's waterways. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources wants everyone to have an enjoyable time while staying safe on the water.

"Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been the kick-off of recreational boating season in Kentucky," said Maj. Shane Carrier, assistant director of law enforcement for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "The two most important things to remember this weekend and before each outing on our waterways is to wear your personal flotation device and do not consume alcohol."

Like seatbelts, lifejackets are proven to save lives.
