Birds of Kentucky: Great Blue Herons

2019-03-22 - Shelby Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
An unusually tolerant pair of Great Blues, fishing in Lake Shelby. The local herons usually leave in an angry, dinosaurish huff whenever another bird or person gets near, but these two and another just outside the frame must have been passing through yesterday.

The theme emphasizes the partnership between various organizations and highlights efforts to eliminate TB. To show his support, Governor Matthew Bevin has declared March 2019 as "TB Awareness Month."

Trusted Adult Wall at ACHS

By Robin Loy

Over the last week at Adair County High School, Sources of Strength peer leaders have been promoting a Trusted Adult Campaign. One goal of Sources of Strength is to promote connections among teens and the trusted adults in their lives.

A trusted adult wall was created at the entrance of the school and students were asked to write the name of their trusted adult and post it on the wall. Students were then given a thank you card to write and hand deliver to their trusted adult to let them know how important they are to the students during both good and bad times.

Students also shared stories about their trusted adults with peer leaders and quickly filled the wall with names. The hope is that anyone who may feel alone will see the wall as a reminder to reach out to their peers who can connect them with a trusted adult.

Students have also been completing thankfulness journals in their English classes during the month of March.

KY Afield Outdoors: Decoding White Bass Runs

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - With all of the rain we received early this year, many Kentuckians are wondering when the white bass will run.

"We are about there, 60 degrees is the magic number for water temperature," said Mike Hardin, assistant director of Fisheries for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "The redbud blooms are as good an indicator as anything."

Redbud trees began displaying buds in parts of central Kentucky over the past 10 days. "We haven't missed anything yet and the run may arrive on time this year," Hardin said. "Last year was spotty, starts and stops with the fish as confused as the anglers. We had up and down weather and water levels."

Check the Box for KY's hungry when you file your taxes

By Ryan Quarles
Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture

Frankfort, KY - Nearly 1 in 6 Kentuckians - including 1 in 5 Kentucky children - don't know where their next meal will come from at some point in the year. That's why I launched the Kentucky Hunger Initiative nearly three years ago: to combat the unfortunate reality that so many of our friends and neighbors are food insecure. With tax season upon us, you can "check the box" to join the fight to reduce hunger in Kentucky.

Every Kentucky income tax return includes an option to donate part of your refund to the Farms to Food Banks Trust Fund. This year, the box is on line 39 of your Form 740. All you have to do is check the box. Your gift to the trust fund helps your fellow Kentuckians get the nutrition they need and supports Kentucky farmers at the same time.

The Farms to Food Banks Trust Fund awards grants to eligible nonprofit organizations that provide food to low-income Kentuckians. Grants must be used to purchase surplus or unmarketable foods from Kentucky farmers.
