LWC Baseball hosts MSC foe Cumberland on Fri/Sat

Lindsey Wilson baseball is set to host Mid-South Conference foe Cumberland (TN) on Friday and Saturday for their first home conference matchup of the season.

The three-game series is slated to begin with a solo game on Friday at 3pmCT, followed by Saturday's doubleheader slated for a NoonCT start, both at Egnew Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.


The Blue Raiders (5-15, 1-2 MSC) return home to Egnew Park after competing in a single game at Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday. The Blue Raiders were defeated 7-3 by the Bulldogs.

Dillan Saunders led the way for Lindsey Wilson on Tuesday, finishing the game with three hits, one run, and an RBI. Austin Rayno and Jordan Gardner were the only other Blue Raiders to cross home plate for a run.

Garnder was also the only other Blue Raider that connected for two or more hits.

As for the season, Rayno leads the Blue Raider Bats with a .301 batting average, connecting on 22 hits. Rayno has been up to the plate 73 times, managing 14 runs, four doubles, and three RBI's.

Steven Calderon leads Lindsey Wilson in doubles (7), home runs (4), and in RBI's (18). Calderon has connected 20 hits and 13 runs as well.

Derek Marrufo is close behind Calderon with three home runs this season. Marrufo and Calderon are the only two Blue Raiders with more than one home run.

Ethan Escue has pitched the most for Lindsey Wilson, pitching for 24.0 innings this season for a 5.63 ERA. Escue has started in all five games played and has struck out 13 batters while giving up 18 runs and 26 hits.

Francisco Arias has recorded the lowest ERA on the team this far with a 3.18 ERA. Arias has seen action in nine games and has pitched a total of 11.1 innings, picking up a record of three wins and one loss. Arias has recorded 13 strikeouts during his time on the mound.

Jose Diana is the strikeout leader for LWC with 19 total strikeouts for an average of 3.2 strikeouts per game.

Cumberland (17-9, 2-1 MSC) visit Columbia, Ky. after falling to Georgia Gwinnett 15- 5 at home on Wednesday.

Offensively, the Phoenix are led by Pablo Custodio and Jose Vera. Custodio leads Cumberland and the MSC with a .441 batting average while connecting for 30 hits. Vera leads the team with a total of 38 hits as well as 26 runs batted in.

Thomas Galart has seen the most action from the mound, pitching 35.2 innings for the Phoenix. Galart has managed a 3.28 ERA, recording 33 strikeouts and six walks.

Polo Portela is the strikeout leader for Cumberland, averaging 10.8 strikeouts per game for a total of 42 strikeouts in 35.0 innings.

Last season, Cumberland defeated Lindsey Wilson 12-5 during the Mid-South Conference tournament in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Competition between the two programs dates back to 2000.
