Letter: New station actually is competition

Shannon Sexton writes:
The majority of our local gas stations are owned by Newcomb Oil. All 5-Star stores are, to the best of my knowledge.

The new store in Pinewood Shopping Center is not Newcomb-owned, and should provide some competition for our gas dollars.

It is also my understanding that the developers of the new station were approached early on in regards to selling out the gas rights in the shopping center (a fruitless bid to limit competition in Columbia) and the developers refused. You can confirm this by contacting the developers.

Monopoly pricing is what keeps us paying more. I'm looking forward to the new option and hopefully lower fuel prices. --Shannon Sexton

Letter: Glad to see cardboard instead of styrofoam

Yvonne Kolbenschlag writes:
AND - it looks as if the to-go box is cardboard, not STYROFOAM which does not decompose for about 500 years. Reheating in a microwave may give harmful rays to food and liquids therein, I have heard, but we can't see or taste the harmful rays, so I don't know if that is true. Cardboard, if not messed up, can be recycled.

I appreciate restaurants that do not use STYROFOAM. --Yvonne

You're right! Mystery Photo nailed - Pollards Chapel UMC

By Linda Waggener

Every guess was correct! The mystery photo posted here Sunday, January 13, 2019, is of Pollards Chapel United Methodist Church, 2251 Sulphur Springs Road, Columbia, Adair County, KY. When we last had an update for our Church Directory the Pastor was Jadell Janes. Please click 'comment/contact' below if an update is needed, or to add service times, etc.

We also need an absolute answer because we're finding it both ways: is it absolutely Pollard's with an apostrophe? Or is it absolutely Pollards, no apostrophe?
