Letter: Lighting and Speed are issues

George Rice writes:
Would like to echo every word of Vonda Derman's comment about the bypass wrecks and put extra emphases about the lighting. I have always had difficulty seeing my next lane when turning at night, there has been times when I almost run off the road searching for my lane. As for speed, after the many wrecks at the cross roads it is simple to slow to about 40mph when approaching the lights at either cross roads. --George Rice

Letter: What the honorifics meant in print

Jim writes:
Deep into the 20th century, the choice of honorific and given name associated with a female, particularly as used in print, told much about her marital status.
  • "Miss" (Miss Sally Jones) indicated a never-married female (of any age), or a divorced woman who had reclaimed her maiden name.

  • "Mrs." followed by a man's given name (Mrs. John Smith) indicated she was married.

  • "Mrs." followed by the woman's own given name (Mrs. Sally Smith) implicitly stated she was widowed or divorced (or occasionally, legally separated).

Commentary: Bypass /Wrecks

By Vonda Derman

It's sad that it's come to this. I've even lost count of how many accidents have happened at both bypasses. One thing to me we all can agree on is, something has got to be done and done quickly, before someone else loses another life--a child, father, mother. No one deserves that because someone wasn't paying attention or was on a phone or couldn't see a light or was texting.

One thing is for sure lighting is a Big factor there at night if it would save a life. Lord help put some lighting up, drop the speed limit, and put some slow strips down; all of them if it helps enforce the speed limits, helps save lives. I care, do you?????

Commentary: On the use of

By Joyce M. Coomer

When I was a child, my grandmother was called Mrs. Walter and her sister-in-law up the road was called Mrs. Oscar. As both ladies' first name was Cora, this was how people in the neighborhood knew which one was the topic of the conversation.

Other ladies in the neighborhood were Mrs. and their first name. About the only exception to this was family members and children (no matter their age) were supposed to address their aunts as Aunt So-And-So, never just by their first name.

There were always a few ladies who were so proper that no one was to use their first name -- even with Mrs. in front of it -- except close family members and life-long friends.
