'Old quilt makes for even more love shining back at me'

The writer has a round oak table in her kitchen bay window dedicated solely to violets, year round. Everyone who visits knows the violet table is for her violets, period, in memory of her grandmothers who always grew them. Using her creative talent, she took a family heirloom quilt, dared to trim it to fit under glass and under the violets and discovered it makes her smile even bigger. -EW

JIM: Another twist on definition of 'expert'

About: Dr. Rogers adds slight twist to definition of expert

JIM writes: My mother-in-law's daughter, who has dealt with many experts over the years, has her own take on that peculiar beast. She solemnly declares that "ex-" means "a has been" and that "spurt" is defined as "a drip under pressure."

(Some people agree with that and some people don't. I stand firmly with the people.)

Poetry by Robert Stone: Playing near at hand

Playing near at hand: a sonnet for Aaliah on her eighth birthday
To go both back and forth I need a swing
that takes me far away from standing still,
while feeling safe as hands each tightly cling
but not completely free from danger’s thrill.

To go first up then down I seesaw need
that always brings me back to starting place
while upward longings upward sooner plead
but not so swift as safety to outpace.

To go a-round I need a merry-go-
that spins me off into another world
while dizzying delights most madly flow
but not enough to leave me baby curled.

No lovelier a day than boxing sand
with loving people playing near at hand.
~ Robert Stone, 7 September 2017
