Day trip: Westfork to Gibson to Greenbriar to Independence Ridge Rd

Pictures along a scenic route from KY 704 near Bakerton to Breeding, with natural beauty to match any place in the world
Click on headline for story with album of pictures along the way

By Linda Waggener

This is report of a short mid-August day trip with a gigantic hill that can be enjoyed in less than half a day, depending on how many stops you have for photos and scenic views. Westfork Road off Highway 704 in Cumberland County, is a left hand turn if you are traveling north from Burkesville to Columbia.

Amid Jewel Weed, butterflies, Black-Eyed Susans and Joe Pye weed beginning to bloom we were met with a sign that read: Creek Gravel Extraction Site Number 8, Cumberland County Fiscal Court. 270-864-3444. We didn't stop but decided Adair County has an abundance of creek gravel and needs one of those sites and signs.

Joyce Coomer: Please care for your animals

Two small kittens lost their lives on Jamestown Street this morning . . . I didn't know these kittens. I had never heard them purr, never felt the softness of their fur, never watched them learn how to pounce on a grasshopper. My day is saddened by their needless deaths and I sincerely hope no little girl will be crying this evening because her beloved kittens are no more.

There are many things that delight me in the mornings -- fog, morning glories, songbirds trilling happily, crickets chirping in the high grass, cat trails through the dew in the yard . . . .

And then I leave my house.

What happened to impressive roadside maintenance? Writer asks

'For years maintenance on roads here was always very impressive, without spraying; what happened?' - Marie Freeman
Personal commentary

Marie Freeman writes:
Not all of us can afford or have good health to maintain our road frontage. Why have I paid property taxes for decades and need to maintain my road frontage? Have no children paid school tax for decades! My frontage is a jungle! Not been maintained at all this year. I asked for no spraying after my mulberry tree turned brown, my pecan tree, walnut tree, and my peach trees I cut down this month! Blackberries on road frontage had no fruit, however the briars weren't even affected. I have a spring not 75 ft from road to, old timers use to tell me the wagon train gathered water from. They mowed once down my road this year, skipped my frontage! Guess because of the red flags. Side boom mowing not done at all. For years maintenance on roads here was always very impressive, without spraying; what happened? --Marie Freeman

James Getchell on roadside spraying: Stop the insanity!

Without the anger many would feel, James Getchell, tells, from long personal experience, his concern about the wholesale use of pesticides at all levels. Even when his neatly maintained frontage was sprayed in spite of the signs posted, he has no animosity toward the government road workers who did it. He recalls experiences of the aftermath of spreading flea and tick pellets around his house, the sadness surrounding visits his Vietnam Veteran friend from Burkesville, KY, who can no longer do the outdoor activities he loved because of Agent Orange - 'In Vietnam they told him Agent Orange was safe.' he writes. And, in a summation, writes 'In the end the collateral damage is never cheap. Please stop the insanity.

Personal commentary

All in all I think our Adair County road crews do a good job. I live on the north end of Greenbriar Road in southern Adair County and my property has a lot of road frontage.

I try to keep my frontage clean and the brush trimmed back.

The county workers with whom I have spoken have told me I do a good job, and they pass right by when using the mowers or chopper on the tractor arm.
