What a week for Rollin Pyles as he turned 100 years young

By Linda Waggener

What a week for Rollin Pyles and his children and their families as they celebrated 100 years of Rollin's life on this earth. With family businesses in both Taylor and Adair Counties, and countless acts of generosity having touched so many, his reach has been far and wide.

A large crowd participated in the first celebration in Campbellsville where he lives now. It took place on his actual birthday, July 17, 2017, and included the proclamation below from city officials there.

The celebrating continued up to and into a second celebration held Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Columbia for his Adair County family and friends.

Cones used widely to increase safety in crosswalks

By Ed Waggener

Recent work by the Kentucky Department of highways to use paint to mark crosswalks has been a big step in the right direction, but leaves much to be done. In many cases, the markings are themselves more than a bit confusing mainly because the aisles are not clearly marked with stop bars, leaving a dangerous level of ambiguity. A solution in addition to or instead of would be the use of traffic cones at crossings. A number of those can be seen at this Instagram page. Click to: Instagram: Cones used in crosswalks

Travellers, including Barry and Mary Ann Loy, have reported satisfaction with the increased level of safety using traffic cones. Others hope the city will use a variation on the crossings in Campbellsville installed by the Selby Company in Campellsville. What's your idea? And where do you see the greatest need for protected pedestrian crossings? Would it be in front of the Columbia United Methodist Church on Burkesville Street? Or from Carrie Bolin Drive to the Five Star on Jamestown Street, or Crossings on Lindsey Wilson Street, Fairground Street, Young Street, or crossings from Lowe's Lane and Miller Avenue, to the sidewalks on the other side of Jamestown Street? Your comments welcome.

Pedestrian hit on public square and survives to tell her story

Recalling the terror and pain of the accident last fall on Columbia's public square, Emmi Foster said, "I saw the bumper of the car aiming at me, and had only a second for the thought to flash in my mind, "he's going to hit me!", before I felt the blow to my lower body."

By Linda Waggener

In a state where the law says "pedestrians in the crosswalk have the right of way", it simply does not feel that way to many people on Columbia's public square who report having problems. We have so much work to do to make it safer for people to walk here.

People have been injured over the years. People have been killed on our square. Thankfully, Emmi Foster survived, and is willing to share her story of being struck by a car, resulting in serious injuries, in hopes of helping save other people from being hit in the future.
