Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Reflections during Black History Month By Carol Perkins Roses are wilted in vases with brown petals lingering on countertops, and all the good pieces of candy are gone from heart-shaped boxes. Another Valentine's Day is behind us. Guy and I have celebrated at least fifty-three of them, counting the ones before we married. One in particular is the most memorable. When he was in the Navy, the only place in town to send or receive flowers was through Butler Funeral Home. They worked with florists in Glasgow since we didn't have one here. I remember so well that I was sitting around the kitchen table with my family one Saturday night when I came home from college, and the phone in the hall rang. Daddy answered the phone and then turned to me, "You have a call from Butler Funeral Home," I thought something had happened to Guy who was overseas at the time. KY Afield Outdoors: Peak for float-and-fly fishing By Lee McClellan Frankfort, KY - Although we've seen many warm fronts this winter with temperatures in the 60s just this past weekend, the water in our highland reservoirs is still cold. Water temperatures are in the high 40s in Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow and Laurel River Lake. Once water temperatures drop below 50 degrees for extended periods, threadfin shad begin to suffer from the cold water. "Threadfin shad get thermally stressed by winter water temperatures, especially in late winter," said Jeff Ross, assistant director of the Fisheries Division for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "They begin to twitch and spasm as they try to fight off death." Smallmouth bass, as well as spotted and largemouth bass, instinctually know to eat these weakened baitfish. The float-and-fly technique imitates stressed shad in cold water as good as anything. Sharon Whitehurst: BJF raises interesting breakfast possibilities Sharon Whitehurst writes: Billy Joe Fudge has added some interesting possibilities for breakfast. A New Englander would never consider a condiment such as sorghum to replace maple syrup--although my late father-in-law, born and raised in NC, once brought a jar of sorghum on a summer visit with the request that I produce biscuits to go with. Bulldog gravy or chocolate gravy?
