Adair Co. Red Bridge over Butler Creek Rooks Denton Road

2016-12-11 - CR #1012, Rooks-Denton Road, Magisterial District 1, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
Another Adair County wonderful best kept secret is out of the bag with improved accessibility: The just paved Rooks-Denton Road, above, at the Red-railed Bridge over Butler Creek. Rooks-Denton Road stretches from Sano Road to Allen Schoolhouse Road. It's all just about as picturesque as this. The meandering trail is almost two miles - 1.928 to be exact - of pristine rural beauty. Worth a lunch time day trip, any time. - Ed & Linda Waggener

Telling it all, Jim almost admits kinship to Jimmy Stewart

Jim writes:
The particular species of sylvilagus referenced is floridanus, commonly known as the Eastern cottontail. However, we are so far north there have been anecdotal sightings of its somewhat distant cousin, Lepus americanus, between our humble abode and the Arctic Circle.

As an aside and for the sake of completeness, one additional comment demands a hearing. On occasion, I've heard Mrs. Jim tell others she lives with a wild hare. I've never seen the creature but made the sad mistake once of asking if its name were Harvey. - Jim

Reader from Ohio tundra endures - swilling caffeinated ambrosia

Coping with a Russian clime and aftermath
Received Sunday, December 11, 2016, at 7:47amCT

By Jim

All is quiet on the northern front this snowy mid-December Sunday morn. A nice rabbit-tracker graced our corner of the world in the dark wee hours post meridian, but Mrs. Jim and I, being not of an inclination to participate in such outdoor activity, have chosen to remain inside, swilling hot caffeinated ambrosia and leaving the peace-loving genus sylvilagus be.

To the curious who will in·ev·i·ta·bly demand to know which of the 17 lagomorph species in the genus sylvilagus graced Jim's corner of the world this morning, we will inquire, but answer may come there none. - CM

NEXT EARLIER CHAPTER: Kentucky Color - Lucy Clark Demumbrunn Chapter One

By Billy Joe Fudge

There was a time and place in our not so distant past when women were second class citizens in many cases. They often were straddled with raising children, cooking, canning, raising a garden, maintaining a household, and working in the field, etc. while in a continual state of pregnancy.

Occasionally however, there would be individuals who would rise above the burdens of culture and the tortures of day to day existence through sheer strength of will and character to carve out a place for themselves and their posterity.

It seemed that then as now they would have been known as strong women who knew what was right and did it.

Maury Lewis is looking for Golden Comet chickens

Needs just a few for eggs for small Beautiful Joppa, Adair County, KY family

Maury Lewis writes:
We are interested in Golden Comet chickens and was wondering if anyone in the Columbia area may raise them. Some of the larger operations may have them for egg production. We only want a few for eggs for a small family.

Maury Lewis 270-634-2092 or Bill Lewis 270-634-0790 --Maury Lewis

For readers unfamiliar with Golden Comet Chickens - From a cursory look around the web, it appears Maury is on to something here: Maybe a Goldilocks-just right-one egg omelet. Golden Comets are products of intermarriage and hybrid vigor makes them marvelous egg factories. - EW

A response to a comment made at Tine Reynolds: Additional notes Daniel Trabue concerning the publication of Col. Trabue's journal, to-wit:

"Trabue himself wrote his autobiography at the time but evidently the first publication was not until 1981 as 'Westward into KY.'"

The above statement fails muster on the most cursory of research.
