Letter: Thanks for persimmon tree story

Ann Goff writes:
Thanks Linda for that story about the persimmon tree, I enjoyed reading that. It brought back a lot of memories how we used to eat them, we had a tree on our way to school and in the evening when we were walking back home from the one room school house we would stop at the tree and get us some persimmons. The young people just don't know what all they missed out on. --Ann Goff

A message from Adair School Superintendent Alan W. Reed

To all members of the Adair County School community:

We are all shocked and grieving from the loss of two of our students and serious injuries to another. Our main objective, until more plans are made, is to take care of our students and staff members who are suffering.

Adair County Schools will run our normal schedule tomorrow, Monday, October 31, 2016 and counselors will be available for both students and staff. We are prepared to continue these services indefinitely.

I would especially appeal to our parents to make sure and contact your child's principal as early as possible in the morning to let them know if you have special concerns about your child during this period of grieving. We will make sure he or she receives special attention or additional counseling.

Again, my sincere condolences to parents, staff and friends for this very difficult loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out for everyone that has been affected by this tragedy.

Sincerely,
Alan W. Reed, Superintendent

Persimmon trip story - A Day Trip

Hunting the remembered persimmon tree
Click on headline for complete story with photo(s)

By Linda Waggener

Not to be too effusive, but it truly was an incredible Kentucky October day -- you know the kind of sunny day that shimmers, chilly clean air softly rattling drying leaves - the kind of fall day my husband Ed calls technicolor, when every single thing on earth looks great.

This trip happened when our good friend Mary Keltner visited and breakfast conversation took us to memories of ripening pears and persimmons and the seasonal butters and preserves that result from them. It was decided the day was perfect and the time was right to check out a remembered right-of-way wild persimmon tree. We knew we could go to the grocery store and buy the giant Japanese persimmons that are rumored to be pretty good, yet we'd miss the journey of the hunt and the taste of home.

Several couples - "a majority of the young people of the community" - celebrated Hallowe'en in style in Columbia in 1902. On that long ago All Saints' Eve (it conveniently fell on a Friday that year), they began streaming out Burkesville street, arriving at the Hancock Hotel at or around 9 p.m., the agreed-upon meeting time. Soon "The parlors were alive with happy voices, the music the latest and much enjoyed."
