Citizen asks that Monroe Street be left open during market

A citizen has written and asked, "would the city PLEASE stop the farmer's market from blocking Monroe Street (by the jail) in Columbia -- there are people down Monroe Street who do work on Saturdays and besides that, why do emergency services allow the street to be blocked? There is room in the parking lot in front of the courthouse annex to set up more booths." -- name on file

LETTER: white flowers of spring 2016 explained

HUNTER DURHAM writes:
Linda/Ed, many years ago I spent quite a bit of time at the Lawrence and Ella Gilpin home, a wonderful couple. Ms. Gilpin (aunt Ella) had a lot of sayings. One she said was, “When there is a lot of snow in the winter, white flowers will flourish in the spring. When there is little snow, the red flowers will flourish.”

They raised some mighty fine children and had a house full of love. They were like second parents to me. --HD

KY participates in national 'Click It or Ticket' campaign

Motorists reminded to buckle up, enforcement heightened through Memorial Day

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) and the Kentucky State Police (KSP) are reminding motorists to buckle up as law enforcement agencies throughout the state join the nationwide Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization May 23 through June 5.

"Every day, unbuckled motorists are losing their lives in motor vehicle crashes," said KOHS Executive Director Bill Bell. "As we approach Memorial Day weekend and the summer vacation season, we want those traveling our roadways to do the one thing that could save them in a crash: buckle up."

There were 761 total highway fatalities in Kentucky in 2015, with 588 killed in motor vehicles. Of those 588 fatalities, 358 (61 percent) were unrestrained. Six of those motor vehicle fatalities occurred over the Memorial Day holiday. None were wearing a seat belt.

By Shamarie Harper
Adair County Schools Media - PR /Technology Resourse Teacher /Migrant Recruiter

As a teacher, one of your main goals and biggest feelings of accomplishment is when you provide your students with an opportunity to use what you have taught them in a practical application or real world connection. It is always in the back of our mind. We are thinking, "how could I allow my students to see and understand how this can help them or others in the future?" Well, between Adair County Middle School Principal Alma Rich, and Adair County High School Welding Instructor Barney Taylor, just such a brainstorm occurred.

Writer learns good black milk snake discourages copperheads

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
As you can likely tell, I am no expert when it comes to herpetology and my instinct is to get away from any snake as fast as possible! I managed last month not to screech and levitate on a chilly morning when I discovered a 'large' black snake curled hose-like at the side of the lane. Jim, when summoned, examined it in long-suffering manner and declared that not only was it not 'large' but that it was a 'good snake'--a black milk snake who would presumably justify its presence by eating bugs and discouraging copperheads. I daresay I might qualify for a bit of scoffing by the locals who presumably take indigenous snakes in stride. My extreme distrust of snakes is a well entrenched part of me, but I will concede that being better informed might be advisable. - Sharon Whitehurst

Students tour Homeplace on Green River

By George Kolbenschlag

Homeplace on Green River hosted about 40 Campbellsville 5th graders for a day on the farm Monday, May 16. The students went on a guided nature hike in the woods, learned about various environmental issues, took a hay ride and completed a "Quest" hike where they learned about barn owls and the history of Homeplace.

This was the second outing at Homeplace for Taylor County students this month. The first, for Kentucky Christian Academy students, was Friday, May 13, and included a program on various Kentucky animals conducted by Campbellsville University's Clay Hill Memorial Forest. Both were funded by a grant from the Taylor County Health Department through the Taylor County Wellness Coalition.

The visits fit well with Homeplace on Green River's role as Kentucky's Outdoor Classroom.

Billy Joe Fudge: Followup on Civics Lesson

On Civil Discourse, and quote from DeFoe on need for more Listening

By Billy Joe Fudge

Anger often emanates from those who are insecure in their existence, who lack the mental and emotional discipline to patiently think through problems, seek solutions and articulate their positions.

Our society and culture has become so impersonal, uncaring and isolationist in manner. "No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent..." John Donne said. I am so saddened when trying to converse with folks who are so afraid of what I might say that they seek to drown me out rather than listening. Relationships are not sought for the good of all and to benefit and grow the community, it seems, but for personal and selfish reasons. - BJF

I do not like viewing photos of snakes. I don't want to be surprised by such creatures and was alarmed by the discovery of a somewhat damaged snake near my bucket of potting earth on the front porch. The cats regularly present us with tiny snakelets that resemble a brown shoestring. I don't appreciate them, but they are small enough that I can deal with one - especially if it has already succumbed to the maulings of an enthusiastic feline.
