Practical Application is the phrase of the day By Shamarie Harper Adair County Schools Media - PR /Technology Resourse Teacher /Migrant Recruiter As a teacher, one of your main goals and biggest feelings of accomplishment is when you provide your students with an opportunity to use what you have taught them in a practical application or real world connection. It is always in the back of our mind. We are thinking, "how could I allow my students to see and understand how this can help them or others in the future?" Well, between Adair County Middle School Principal Alma Rich, and Adair County High School Welding Instructor Barney Taylor, just such a brainstorm occurred. Mrs. Rich had been made aware of the needs of individuals who pick up their children at ACMS. The steps going down into the Gym had no railing down the middle, which made for rough navigation for grandparents or parents with small children. I personally never remember there being one, and come to think about it, when I have had high heels on, I always gravitated to the far left or right to hold on to something. Then the light bulb went off! What better way to help teach students practical usage of their skills and add leadership by helping ones community than to contact Barney Taylor and see what his input about the situation might be. Would it be possible for his students to create a railing, was that within their skills set, did they have time, and did Mr. Taylor feel it would be helpful to his students? Well, low and behold, it was a perfect real world application for Mr. Taylor's welding students. Not only could they make the railing, but they could install it. He jumped right on board, and was excited that his students would have a real world practical application to connect all the dots from learning their skills to using their skills. Mr. Taylor asked Josh Grant, Trevor Willis, and Brett Burton, all senior welding students, to complete the task. And of course anyone who knows this group of young men, knows they jumped on it, and took pride in their job. The end result as you can see is wonderful and it was without question a Win-Win situation for all involved. This story was posted on 2016-05-20 12:23:15
