KY Afield Outdoors: Quality time for stream smallmouth

Frankfort, KY - A stretch of mild weather that loosens winter's grip is an alarm bell for stream smallmouth anglers fed up with being stuck indoors.

For them, wade fishing a cold stream for bronzebacks is a surefire way to melt away the winter doldrums.

Mystery Photo identified: Hilltop Road, Liberty, KY

1st was Joe B. McKinley's answer at 11:08amCT and then 32 minutes later, Shannon Sexton's answer, the same street by another name, over 65 guesses received. And, we found it goes by at least four names.
By Ed Waggener

Alan Reed grew up less than a mile away on Taylor Street in Liberty, KY, from the Mystery Photo picture and didn't recognize were it was when he first glanced at it, he said today when he was called as an Adair Countian who would serve as an authority: We wanted to know if "The Old Water Tank Hill Road in Liberty" would be the same as "Hilltop Road," and the same as Liberty's sign "Hilltop Drive" and he said it was, to the best of his knowledge, he said. His directions were to take KY Hwy 49 up the hill past Bartle Funeral Home but take the double right at the top of the hill, which was the path Linda had chosen, rather than journey on to Bradfordsville on 49.

Chris Dial gets within a few blocks of the Mystery Photo

One of the best guesses, but still off. We have to wonder if the CLUE, that he should know because his his name is "Dial" not "Dile," and wonder if he's related to Judge Randy Dial, whose office is on the public Square in Liberty, KY, was "wrote up" in the Casey County News on January 26, 2016 in a story at this link: Dial reflects on first year as Judge-Executive.

Chris Reeder send another, better guess on Mystery Photo

Says he's been stumped ... Wherever this place is we have traveled many miles to get there!!!

Chris Reeder writes:
You sure have us stumped!! In reading the clues I think it is obvious that the location is in Casey county. I think this is the road that leads into Clementsville north side of highway 70. This is strictly a guess. One of the clues is that it was a larger community than Dunnville and I'm not thinking Clementsville is larger than the metropolis of Dunnville. Or could you be headed into the Yosemite area because Hwy 70 could also be visible there. Wherever this place is we have traveled many miles to get there!! - Chris Reeder

Jackson Brower likes That Building photo

Jackson Brower writes:
Your better half Linda is quite the photographer and cutline writer as well Up here in northern Pennsyltucky, editors refer to them as captions. A couple of years ago, I sent a photo over to our editor, Christen Stroh at the South Hills - Mon Valley Messenger and made reference to the cutline. Christen did not know what the heck I was talking about.

I like what you all said about the Adair County Courthouse clock tower being one of the most picturesque in America. I would certainly agree with that. If I am not mistaken, this shot on Greensburg Street was taken near the home of the late Ben Gordon Berley and his mom, Nancy. They were both very nice folks. BJ Hagy: Nice to see Liberty's stand for Freedom(s)

By BJ HAGY

Hello Ed,

Nice to see Liberty's stand for Freedom(s). The Veterans Park Wall of names is a great tribute to the veterans. My name, my Dad's name, George Frank Hagy, and two of my uncles' names, Thomas A. Dickerson and John Dickerson are all on this wall. Further note is that John Dickerson was one of the brick and block masons who helped build this wall. Both John and Tommy still live in Liberty/Casey County.

Thanks for the picture and the reminder of what we have there.

In memory of Alene Hale Grider

I have no doubt that when Saint Peter swung wide the Pearly Gates to heaven, her one-time little darlings welcomed her, voices raised in unison, with a rousing and heartfelt, "Good Morning, Miss Alene!" - JD Gee
Alene Hale Grider (1931-2016)

By JD Gee

It's with sadness I read of Alene Hale Grider's passing. As is true with most everyone in a rural area, we had more than one connection. My mother had known her parents all her life; Alene's brother married one of my first cousins; and, in her role as "Miss Alene," she was my first grade teacher all those many years ago. At the time, she seemed really old; in reality, she was barely past 30.
