By Ed Waggener

Adair County Judge Mike Stephens announced at the opening of tonight's August 11, 2015 regular session of Adair Fiscal Court that he had delivered a letter to the Adair Ambulance Service Board that, after consulting with Kentucky State Auditor Adam Edelen, he was requesting a state audit of the books of the taxing district. "We are not implying guilt on anyone's part," he said.

Judge Stephens said, "My reasoning was to be 100% transparent to the citizens of Adair County (tax payers) as they are the owners of the EMS taxing district."

Walker Street residents ask for slower school traffic

From Theresa and Chris Ingermann
and all the other residents of Walker Street, Columbia, KY

I would like to address the traffic on Walker Street by all the schools.

This is the main street used by most morning and afternoon bus traffic as well as parents and high school students.

Please, please, people slow down.

I can say at least 90% of cars as well as busses speed down this street at least 10 miles over the limit.

Much of teacher's life has changed - but one - since 1872

By Mike Watson

School started for some last week, for others his week. I salute all those who will be in front of the class this coming season. This August marks the sixth year that I will not be on the firing line, but I still have the same ache in the pit-of-the-stomach as the first day nears. The following list of 'Rules for Teachers' was generally in use in 1872, when it was first published. All these did not apply to all, but...
  1. Teachers each day will fill lamps and clean (lamp) chimneys.
  2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session.
  3. Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual taste of the pupils.
  4. Male teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.
  5. After 10 hours in school, the teacher may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
  6. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty.
  7. The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of 25 cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.
Times have certainly changed, except for the pay. --Mike Watson

Jon Halsey: Waiting to see white sedan bring mail again

Jon Halsey writes:
Yes Holly, you are correct.

I wasn't comfortable putting Billy's name out there without his consent.

As for criticism, I can't imagine Billy getting any. Other than, that is, my own often voiced complaint that he delivers way too many bills.

Life was just a little less sunny when he was off for his knee surgery and we look forward to the welcome sight of his white sedan making it's way down the lane.
