Linda Cook relates experience paying by mail

Linda Cook writes:
I can sympathize with Ralph's wife. Three years ago, I mailed our truck payment in as the bank it was financed thru didn't have online bill pay. That check is still missing - our bank was very nice about putting a stop on it. Then in June of 2014, I mailed another payment in for something else. That round, I put it in a priority mail envelope with tracking, mailed it from Elizabethtown to go up the road to Louisville. Imagine my surprise when it wound up in Puerto Rico. And pretty much circled the entire place - for well over a week. Go figure... - LINDA COOK

Asks about Neighborhood Crossing vantage point

Comments re photo 61594 Scenic Adair Co KY Neighborhood Crossroads George Rice writes:
Ed, where were you when you took this picture? Were you hanging from a sky hook or are you using a drone now. It is a good picture and you and Linda are some of those great people from those years of yesterday. - George Rice
Thanks, George Rice, and you're right on one thing, I am one of those from yesteryear. Linda is much, much younger. The vantage point was near at the corner of E Frazier Avenue and Wood Avenue, not far from where T.P. Scott grew up. Hope that helps. - ED

Holly Caldwell identifies great carrier at Knifley

Holly Caldwell writes:
Jon Halsey, I believe my father-in-law, Billy Caldwell, is your mail carrier. He is a wonderful, hard working man as are all the rural carriers I know. My husband carries the mail and until he started working part time, 10 years ago, I never realized how difficult their jobs are and how much criticism they are given for things that are out of their control. - Holly Caldwell

Mark Hale: Now pays most of bills online rather than use the mail

Mark Hale writes:
Took me a long time to embrace the technology, but we now pay most of our bills online. The banking system is safe and they do a great job of policing activity. We have always been made aware of any unusual activity. Pay those out of town bills online And they get there money usually in a day or two. Works great. - Mark Hale

KY is a leader in reducing number without health insurance

Gov. Beshear's statement on Gallup study finding Kentucky's Uninsured rate at 9 percent. Only Arkansas has outpaced the state in lowering the number of those without medical insurance

Statement of Gov. Steve Beshear

Frankfort, KY - "For the third time in a year, Gallup has cited Kentucky as a national leader among states experiencing the sharpest decline in the rate of the uninsured. By a small measure, only Arkansas has outpaced Kentucky's progress since the Affordable Care Act took effect Jan. 1, 2014.

"Not surprisingly, Gallup found seven of the 10 states with the greatest reduction in the uninsured have followed the same path as Kentucky by expanding Medicaid and establishing a state-based exchange. Our newly insured Kentuckians are not waiting until they are sick to access their health care benefits. They are using their coverage to seek recommended preventive health services, such as lifesaving breast and colorectal cancer screenings. Over time, this increased utilization of preventive health services will help improve the overall health of our citizens and our state.

"This most recent Gallup study once again provides unbiased confirmation that Kentucky is on the path to make transformational changes in the lives and health of our Commonwealth and our more than 500,000 Kentuckians who have qualified for health care coverage through kynect since Jan. 1, 2014."

Anonymous writes again: Agrees kids just need to be kids

Anon writes:
As some have mentioned kids just need to be kids. I agree 100%, however, I feel that chance is further explored while attending preschool with other children their age, regardless of their skills assessment. I do not feel discriminated against.

I was just asking why offer programs for this age group, to only turn them away. We will continue as we have with him. Those who do know him knew he was excited to see other children his age and to correspond with them in ways he's unable to with adults who surround him.

I am super proud of my child, and would like to point out that he is a kid that always gets to be a kid. I feel no need to explain the urgency to have children grow and learn together. Not only at a young age but all through life you will be working, learning and growing with others.

Jon Halsey: A plug for Rural Mail Carriers, RFD

His own (unnamed) rural carrier is a gem. Rural mail carriers a breed apart, he says

Jon Halsey writes:
While I share most of Ralph Roy's criticisms of the USPS, I do have to put in a plug for the RFD portion. Our rural carrier is a gem and often goes way above and beyond. I also want to state for the record that this has been my life's experience with Rural Mail Carriers across the country. They definitely seem to be a "breed apart" and I highly admire them and their extraordinary dedication to service. I have no doubt that many rural patrons have remarkable stories to tell.

If the Management portion could be reformed in the Rural Carriers image, we would again have a very valuable service indeed. - Jon Halsey

The US Post Office has made a lot of changes and none for the better.

My wonderful wife Glinda sent our Kentucky Utilities bill in and then a few days later got a letter saying it was late!

Glinda called and found her check had not arrived and we could chance having our electricity turned off if it did not arrive within a few days.

BJF on what a trip to Nancy, KY, has to include

Scolds writer of for not going to Haney's Orchard at Nancy, KY. Laments loss of knowledge of 'what a real tree ripened and many of the genetically pure apples really taste like.'

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
A trip to Nancy and not visiting Haney's Orchard to at least sample the homemade, fried apple pies is like going to Niagara County, New York, and not seeing Niagara Falls.

On a serious note, we have become so inoculated by the big three varieties, Yellow Delicious, Red Delicious and Granny Smith which have been crammed down our throats, pun intended, that we've forgotten what a real tree ripened and many of the genetically pure apples really taste like. - Billy Joe Fudge

Research trip to Nancy, KY winds up down on the lake

Charles Marshburn writes
Now, it is known that Daniel Trabue was a fourth generation Huguenot (Internet research, 4 hours and 12 minutes!)

The Tarters may have been French who moved to Germany before migrating to the US. The Cains could possibly have been French also. I will only take the word of a scholar living at that time because the records are "iffy".

I went to Nancy to do research and wound up at the liquor store! - Charles Marshburn

Letter to parent of Way Above Average kid

"PKCreston" writes:
Dear Parent,

Be very thankful that your child is accelerated in learning. Having been an educator for many years, albeit not in the early childhood years, I know that the intention of this program is to help children who are struggling in some aspect of their lives. Your child is waaay too young to even contemplate sending to school. Enjoy these days and realize that your child will benefit from an environment far less structured than school. He/she will not regress and, most importantly, I doubt that the school system (or whatever the affiliation), is trying to discriminate against you or your child; I'm sure they are following the guidelines and rules. How many parents do you think would love to be in your shoes?

Wondering why. -"PKCreston"
